Hi All -

I'm just getting started making knives. "Making" may be a bit of a stretch, as I've only managed to put a handle on one of the Spyderco Mules. I'm pleased with how it turned out, so I'd like to try my hand at a few more.

I'm not to the point of making a blade just yet - I'd like to stay with putting handles on blanks for a bit longer. That brings me to finding a source for decent blanks - any advice? I'd get a few more of the mules, but the new batch is too rich for my blood - $65 ea.

Any recommendations on sources for decent starter knife blanks? I'd like to keep it under $20 or so for now.

Texas Knifemakers Supply has some that look interesting, but they don't ID the steel. (Also, is the cryo treatment worth the extra couple $$ ?)

Other sources?

BTW, here's the finished mule and sheath....

Clean work there. Jantz, Sheffields Knife Supply and K&G (Knife and Gun Supply) all sell blades or "kit knives." Most are available in the $5-20 range. They're all servicable and provide a decent foundation in installing handles on a blade.

What Will said.

But thought it worth mentioning that Jantz has mostly the same blanks as TexasKnifemakers and they DO identify the steel type on most of what they offer. Order yourself a Jantz catalog so you can peruse the blanks they offer.

Basically you can then use the info learned from Jantz and either order from them or get the blanks from Texas with Cryo if your interested in that. But at least you'll know what kind of steel it is.

You can pick up some pretty nice blades for a buck or two on E-bay. Some tell steel type, some don't. Just search under knifemaking or blade blanks.

Pat at North Coast Knive is great to deal with too. I started out with blanks and slabs from there.

I appreciate both the advice on the sources for blanks as well as the compliments on my work.

I'd love to get together some time. Work is very slow for me right now - let me know when the best time would be for you.

You ought to try Great Lakes Water Jet as well. He has a
good selection of blanks and several choices in steel
