Decent bivy?

Howdy folks-

I hate bugs. Gnats and flys and such biting my behind all night. I realize a headmask and tucked in pants can do a lot, but I want to try out a decent bivy.

I've never used one. I'm looking for one that's lightweight (don't particularly need or want silnylon), rugged, able to fit a 6'4" man comfortably, and not too expensive. (Keep in mind the competition for it is a $30 nylon tarp!)

Thanks for any thoughts folks-

I use a Gore-Tex Army ECWS Bivy sprayed with permethrin. I bought a bunch of surplus ones for patches/parts for mine. If you want I could send you one, I'd even spray it with permethrin. The surplus ones are cheap on the auction sites, because some have a couple tiny tears or a sticky zipper. I could/would send extra fabric from a cannibalized bivy to fix inevitable tears.

I used this one on an overnighter this week. The skeeters were out so I zipped it all the way up and had no issue. It occasionally goes on sale for $60.

I've used it about a dozen times now and am happy with it. It can trap heat which is both good and bad depending on temps.

Check out sportsmansguide.com. They have their own line of products that I think are called Guide Gear.:D

I have one and aalthough I have only used it a couple of times and have nothing else to compair it to, I have not found anything terribly wrong with it-moistrure buildup could be a problem I think, but never experienced it.just lucky?

Good idea on the permethrin.

Thanks for the input! A local store was closing recently so I picked up a Eureka solitaire, actually. I like it except one of the poles was broken upon opening it, and Eureka has been unresponsive to multiple emails over a week and a half or so. Gonna try calling them this week I guess. Grr.

If you want just bug resistence I have used a Silk bag liner sprayed with permethrin, and it works very well. If you want weather resistence I have used Snugpacks bivy and for about 100$ I prefer it to the USGI bag which is bulky and heavy. My .02.

Bug net hung from the roof of your tarp?

Otherwise I would suggest a lightweight one man tent, but that's gonna run you almost $200.
