My buddy's b-day is coming up and he has been restoring and working on antique straight razors. This includes making new handles from various exotic woods. He's wearing those cheapo surgical type masks and I just don't like it. Especially sonce he had a pretty dramatic allergic reaction to Purple Heart Wood. All he needs to do is inhale some of that mess. So I figured I'd get him a decent mask, but I don't even know where to start. Anybody have any suggestions? I know they sell some at Home Depot and Lowes and such but have no idea whether they're worth the money. I figure $50+/- should buy a decent one? More or less is ok, but I can't spend a fortune.

I bought a mask from MSC Industrial Supply years ago that had a pair of filters that were replaceable. They had a variety of filters for different applications.

I buy 3M stuff exclusively. They have proven to be an invaluable resource of knowledge and have a ton of products that are great for specific needs. High quality respirators that do a good job are available for under $50. A half face respirator and some safety glasses are what I recommend if a budget of $50 is strict. The proper fit needs to be made though, and the seal around the mouth and nose is important (obviously). Facial hair can be problematic in creating a tight seal.

That's good to hear. I ended up going with a 3M half face mask, the one with the twin filters- I don't remember the model #. I got him that and a good set of goggles. Along with a couple pieces of ivory micarta. He was very pleased with them.

I use the 3M respirators a fair amount. I usually use the cartridges designed for "painting" or in other words a chemical resistant cartridge. The little masks with the valve in the front are rated N95 and they aren't bad. I used those too and are probably my favorite.

You're a good man, and may have added years to your friends life. The following will all protect from CF, wood, and G10/laminate dust. There are some that offer a charcoal filter to prevent the smell of burnt material from penetrating (organics).
