This is probably a prac-tac question, but I prefer posting in here and I know you folks are equally knowledgable.

Can anyone recommend a good gun shop in Connecticut? I have been reading and reading and reading in preparation for getting a decent, reasonably priced handgun and I feel like I'm at the point where I need to handle a few. The one gun shop near me was . . . unimpressive but there are surely some decent ones out there?

Newington Gun Exchange (Market Square, Newington): Great selection of new and used rifles, pistols and shotguns. Very willing to handle transfers ($40) . Prices on their used items is competetive and sometimes, if they bought a gun outright from the previous owner (ie. it is not on consignment), they will take a couple extra bucks off. All their staff are helpful, I prefer working with Jeff- he's always been good to me and our family.

Hoffman's Gun Center- Berlin TPKE, Newington- I haven't been in their store since they moved to the new location. However, they have always had a LOT of inventory in the past- especially new. Some items they have the best pricing in town, others- you have to wonder what they were smoking when they put the tag on it. Customer serivce there can be hit or miss.

Cabelas- East Hartford- Their pricing can be hit or miss, but for being a chain store they are good folks. Allow yourself some time when you go. They have a pretty decent selection of new and used guns, and their sales people are usually pretty pleasant. Avoid that place like the plague on weekends.

If you're in Central Connecticut anyways, stop by Jo-Jo's Gunworks in Southington. John and Jody are good people. They have always done great gunsmithing work for us and I believe Kevin Estella has had good stuff come out of their shop too. They price their wares honestly. They have a niche for tactical carbines (especially AR-15 types), gunsmithing work, and custom firearms manufacturing (especially 1911 type pistols). They have a small shop, and not too much inventory, but the owners and their employees are great guys who love to help their customers out.

Foilist- you're out in Windham County IIRC. If you down 84, you could make a day of hitting all these shops pretty easily. :)

Thanks for listing all those possibilities. I have some time off work coming up, so I can make a day of it. You'd think there would be more in my neck of the woods.

I've been thinking for a long time of buying a defense-capable handgun that is still cheap enough to feed and fun/versatile enough to use for recreation. I have only .22's at the moment. I'm thinking .357 mag revolver, but I need to handle a variety I think.

Let them know Estela sent you and they'll take care of you. I've known these guys for years and they are my gunsmiths and the only guys I trust to work my with my firearms inside and out. They are black rifle specialists as well as 1911 guros. Dave Sevigny of Team Glock uses pistols Jody puts together for him. This store is top notch.

Newington Gun is my other favorite place to spend/waste money. Lars, Gary, Jeff and the rest of the crew are great to deal with. They have an annual sale in March and are all excellent folks. You'll love it.
