Decent tasting protein bars?

I don't know where else to post this,.. so here goes.
I've tried a few different protein bars, and most of them have some sort of chocolate taste, without any sort of sweetener. I don't mind some sugar in my protein bars, and they don't have to be the very best or healthiest protein bars available.
(I don't want candy bars either)
I just want them to be filling, and tasty, maybe to replace a meal every now and then.
I've tried MetRx, and Powerbar protein bars, and neither really seems to taste much better than silly putty. (powerbar peanut butter is okay) A company that provides a variety in tasty different flavors would be nice.
One last thing. I need them to be available in most places that that sell such things. Thanks.

They all suck. I get the Clif Builder bars, and would say they are "good", but only because that's relative to the other brands I've tried. Wal-mart and lots of grocery stores have them here, and even some gas stations.

I use protein bars every day for at least one of my 6-7 small meals. Here are the ones I've found work best for me (taste-wise, etc.)...

- Oneway Whey Protein Energy Bar (Peanut Butter & Chocolate, Coconut & Almond)
- EAS Advantage High Protein (cookies & cream, chocolate chip brownie)
- MetRx ProteinPlus (chocolate, chocolate chip, chocolate fudge)
- Premier Nutrition Odyssey (chocolate coconut almond, chocolate peanut butter)
- Nitro-Tech (Double Chocolate Supreme)

A bit high on the fat side, but I think that Tiger's Milk(Original) bars are, ahem, the cat's meow......I would eat two(280 calories total) for a yield of 10 grams of protein...and they taste good.

I've only tried a few "Pure Protein" bars and I thought they were alright. My favorite is the strawberry shortcake but I also had some chocolate malt one that was good too. Better than most chocolate protein bars I've had.

Right now I'm sticking with the Clif Builders. They're cheap and decently tasty. I would go with the peanut butter ones as I think those taste the best, followed by mint and then the chocolate. I find the chocolate has a really gritty texture, more so than the other flavors. I'm not sure how available they are though as I get them from Trader Joe's. I would imagine that other stores with Cliff products would have the Builders as well though.

I like the Clif Builder bars. The mint chocolate one is my favorite. Snickers Marathon bars are also pretty good.

I've wanted to try the Cliff Builder Bars myself. I recently had the Special K meal replacement bars though. They might be a bit on the sugary side, but they have 10g of protein each, only 25g of carbs and 180 cal(50 from fat). They did taste pretty good too and I think there are 5-6 different flavors.

I like the Snickers energy bars, the multigrain ones taste the best. They also have a protien bar as well that is pretty good, I think it has 23g of protien in them. The energy bars only have 10g, I think.

The Snickers bars are pretty good and I grab one at work every now and then just to get me though until lunch time.

I never worry about the caloric value of these things because I'm pretty confident that you burn more calories just trying to chew the damn things than they contain.

i used to eat metrx myself and they were not very good, i was eating one when my son was 6 or 7, he wanted a bite, i told him "its not candy" but he still wanted to try it, he took a bite and went "yuck" and spit it out lol, i have tried a few brands and never thought any were close to being good,

ISnickers Marathon bars are also pretty good.
Good call on these. The thing you need to watch out for is any bar that has too much sulfur dioxide. This can constipate you something wicked and throw off your electrolyte balance.
Also, if you are a man, limit the amount of Soy based protein and select Whey based protein. Soy protein can increase estrogen levels in men (not good) and disrupt menstrual cycles in women (even worse).

Original Clif bars have too many carbs to make good use of the little if any protein in them. try Muscle/Monster Milk (They include BCAA - Branch Chain Amino Acids and EAAs - Essential Amino Acids). Their products are lactose free. The average athletic man eats around 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. This keeps muscle tissues healthy and growing.

If you are gonna buy from a supplement store (Smoothie Factory/Vitamin Shoppe) go with the Muscle Milk bars, they taste pretty decent and are good for the low carb thing (don't recommend for post-workout though). If you're primarily looking at the grocery store, the Pure Protein and low carb Detour bars are actually decent tasting and decent for you. Like RevDevil said, avoid any bar whose protein is mostly made of soy or gelatin. Soy is better than nothing, but the chemical structure (not very bioavailable) and amino acid variety (mostly non-essentials) are nearly useless from a nutritional standpoint. If you decide to buy online in bulk, shoot me a PM and I can make a few recommendations (brands and websites).

My son recently graduated from USMC boot camp. He and his fellow recruits requested protein bars frequently. He specifically requested Clif bars for their good taste.

Ever consider making your own? The show "Good Eats" on the Food Network had an episode where they made protein bars and similar foods which seemed quite appealing. The best part about this, other than saving money in the long run, is you can add the fruits you like or completely leave them out if that isn't what your looking for.

Any of these.

The new Peanut Butter Pretzel Twist is mindblowing.

Zero Impact bars are decent, especially for the nutrition they give you. MetRX are OK. Cliff bars are reliably pretty tasty.

Just eat real food. Cook a tray of chicken legs or grill up a few pounds of steak. Cut into portions and wrap in foil. You can dry beef strips (jerky) too. It's fine all day as long as you don't get it wet, or contaminate it. Cold steak, an apple, handful of nuts. More satisfying than a sugar-filled, soy (evil) filled "protein bar".
