Decided on an Emerson...

I am about to pull the trigger on my first nice EDC knife and have decided on an Emerson. Either mini A-100 or mini CQC-7 with combo blade, wave would be nice but not a necessity. I am having most trouble deciding on the finish! What is real difference between satin and the stonewashed satin? I found a satin I could buy now but I read where they are doing away with that finish so that can't be good thing right?

Any help would be nice in steering me in right direction.

Thanks,
David W.

I love my CQC-7A. Here's a photo mine with the stonewashed finish:

I'm sure someone else can chime and provide a good pic. of the plain satin finish.

either finish would be fine for me, i guess i would prefer the satin given a choice, but both are good.

i would get plain edge on the mini '7, i would get PE on just about anything vs combo edge, i dont like the serrated part, it doesnt really serve any purpose, unless ya cut open a lota boxes or cut a lotta hose, the resale value is almost always better on PE vs PS too.

I would prefer the new stonewash finish. It looks excellent. I never cared much for the older satin finish. You almost have to ask delaers today if their knives are stonewashed or the older satin because Emerson is still using the old satin finish marked boxes even if they are stonewashed.

Satin (like black) is a coating. Surface abrasion can (or will) wear it thin or off depending upon use over time. Stonewashed otoh, is a surface finish. It's a 'worn' look but there's no coating on the metal to wear thin or off. Small scratches tend to blend in.

Emerson may be discontinuing the satin in favor of stonewashed, but imho, it's neither good nor bad. It just makes sense for them. They'll still do black. Often the knives are offered in plain and serrated, and in either the black or satin finish. Probably made no sense at all to have added the stone washed option, without discontinuing the similar looking satin finish. I'd guess many (most) folks would prefer the stone washed finish anyway. Emerson have it done nicely.

The satin coating finish of the past gets scratched up if you just look at it. I cut open a small package and the blade looked like it had gone through a war. The stonewash finish holds up much better since it already has a lot of micro scratches on it.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I will try and get the stonewashed verison if I can find one
Never realized it would be this hard to find a knife to buy:)

Mini 7 all the way, I love mine, its my favorite EDC.. Perfect design, size, carries well, built like a small tank, and is waved to top it off.. Great knife!
