Hi guys:

I've been shopping online for a Large Sebenza (this will be my gents knife), and I'm slowly starting to settle on the wood inlay with a stainless damascus blade.

What are the pros and cons of stainless damascus over S30V? Is it easier to maintain? Is it easier to sharpen?

also, input from sebenza damascus owners would be much appreciated!

I own two Sebenzas with wood inlays and Damascus blades, both 2004 Limited Edition versions. One is small, and the other is large. Here are some photos of the large one (Maple Burl inlay and Devin Thomas stainless "Raindrop" Damascus blade):

I cannot speak to the strength of the blade compared to S30V, because I have plenty of plain Sebenzas to carry. The stainless Damascus should theoretically be easier to maintain than non-stainless. CRK has a very reasonable refurbishing program, and one of my large plain Sebenzas just came back from one of these excursions, but I am not sure how the wood inlays and Damascus blades play into this. You should thus ask CRK directly.

Stainless Damascus is reasonably good steel. S30V is great steel. Stainless Damascus is nicer to look at. S30V is better in every other way. At least that’s my opinion.

Lunde...those photos are INSANE!! What did you take those with?

I have a Cocobola inlay, Devin Thomas ladder Damascus Large Classic. It is probably the sharpest knife I've ever owned. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Mellow Chaos, you wrote:

Nikon D100 digital SLR with Nikkor 60mm Micro lens. The white balance is not the best, though. I am still working on my technique. Neil at True North Knives takes great photos.

very very nice shots!  I'm still struggling with my Olympus C8080

So based on the replies, the stainless damascus is a good steel, but not necessarily better than S30V?
