Decisions, decisions... Seal 2000 or Seal Pup?

I've been having an internal debate, whether I should get a Seal 2000 or a Seal Pup. (I can only afford one right now.) I'd like to get the Seal 2000, since it's larger. (Also, my wife has a Recon Tanto, and I'd like to get something as big, no more "mine's bigger than your's".) On the other hand, the Seal Pup is shorter, ergo, easier to carry, and legal as Texas' max length is 5.5 inches...
Anybody have(or had) both to offer a side-by-side comparison?

Matt

Hi Matt,

Till any other SOG fans step in, let me give you my "two cents."

Both knives are outstanding. I've handled them both extensively and you and I share opinions on them. The larger is "big" and "awesome" with excellent field uses. But to some, it might be a tag too big. Depending on ones' hand size and strength. The Pup is a "perfect" knife in many ways. Not too big...not too small. Easily carried. Fits most hands well. Easy to handle and maneuver.

So, besides buying both, you have a tough decision.

The Seal Pup has been my standard "water knife" for years (and was my general backpacking knife for a while). I use the pup whenever I'm going to be in and around bodies of water. Like Ron said, not too big, not too small. Relatively inexpensive very light, good edge holding for 440A, don't have to worry much about corrosion with the powder coating. The plain edge is just long enough for almost any job. I never found the serrations very useful, but they don't occupy a big amount of space, so they don't really get in the way. The original cordura sheath was done extremely well. I also tried the kydex sheath when it first came out, but it was way too tight and didn't fit correctly, so I went back to the original cordura sheath. The current kydex sheath might be better (maybe you can attest to this, Ron?). Go ahead and go for the Seal Pup, you won't be disappointed.

Hi Felix,

Thanks for your comments about the Pup....but I'm sorry you had problems with your new sheath. Each user desires their Kydex sheath to have a different amount of drag while extracting their knife. Since it's impossible to have it universally perfect for everyone, one of the neat things about Kydex is that the tension is adjustable. Here's adjusting instructions from our website. If that still doesn't work, email me and I'll fix this up for you. I want satisfied customers!

I think that you have answered your own question. The Seal Pup is legal (to carry) in Texas.

Buy the Seal Pup, THEN take a look at a SOG Tigershark. (It's somewhat larger than the Seal 2000.).

Hi Ron--

There was nothing actually "wrong" with the kydex sheath I had. I bought the sheath separately when the Pup started shipping with the kydex standard. I did play with the sheath for a while using methods similar to those in the SOG faq, and even used a hair dryer. I did manage to fix the slight fit issue, but I could never get it quite right in terms of looseness for a draw I was satisfied with (without ruining the sheath fit overall). Like you implied, everybody has a different preference for how "tight" a kydex sheath should be. I should note, however, that my kydex sheath preferences lie on the "looser" side than most folks. I ended up giving the sheath to a friend of mine with a Pup and he's been using it to his satisfaction since.

Thankyou for your offer to fix the sheath, but basically there's nothing wrong to fix. SOG has always been one of my favorite production knife companies. I have always been happy with the way you handle customer service and the way you moderate the forum. I wish you and SOG continued success and happy holidays!

Felix
