So, I'm making my first gec purchase, and have narrowed it down to the gunstock jack for my first one. The problem is, I don't know which covers to get, and have enough money for one. The covers are dead skunk acrylic, and the buckthorne bone. Just need some input on which one to buy, as I'm dead even on which one to pick right now.

Just my opinion but the Dead Skunk acrylic GEC does now is not as interesting as the earlier was. I would go with the bone just for this reason alone.

The acrylics GEC puts out are nice but they will get scratched up relatively easy compared to bone or wood. I just got a stag 22 Magnum gunstock & they are an excellent little knife!! I really like the copperhead jigged bone as well. Here is mine but these are the pics the dealer took.

Another vote for bone, or maybe wood if you can find one.

Take a look at the Gunstock Jack (large) over at KSF made by Schatt & Morgan. Derrick had these in stag. I have one and it is certainly as nice as GEC's. May not have quite the snap of GECs.

jhany, I LOVE bone but someone has to stand in the acrylic camp...be proud, take a stand and buck the system, go acrylic:thumbup:

That said, I'd go bone:D

Seriously no wrong answer here:thumbup:

I would also choose the bone as the acrylics scratch fairly easily. All you have to do is look at my SAK that I carry every day. Of course it is just plastic versus acrylic.

The OP has a very real dilemma. Most people here speak up for the bone version, and I agree the light colour smooth bone is very alluring.

However, I swim against the tide here as an unashamed fan of acrylics, GEC do these so really well and as for those of you warn about them getting scratched up etc I'd respond by saying Why on earth do you keep knives in the same pocket with change, keys and allsorts?? Might as well throw them in a tool-box :D:barf: Acrylic is not delicate if treated well and for that matter, bone can crack and chip too.

Taken me AGES to get on to the Forum today what with all sorts of dot defender and database error hi-jacks, it's getting like Russian Roulette if you can actually get on and converse with people, absurd! Well, here I hope will be some acrylic pics.

I like both the dead skunk and the buckthorn bone. You'd be happy with either. I had the same choice and went with the buckthorn bone, and have been very happy with it. That magnum is a sweet knife.

The good news is, you're getting a great knife no matter which covers you decide to get. So, there's no wrong answer.

For me personally, I think natural covers like wood, bone and antler tend to look better with age. The more you use them the better they look. I'm not sure acrylic ages quite as nicely as those natural materials. However, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. I hope you enjoy your new knife no matter which you choose.
