So hard to make. I bought a Spyderco SE Native a couple of weeks ago, and now want to start saving up for my next knife.

Decisions, decisions.

Here's a partial wish list:

Ka-Bar TDI
HAK
Boker Subcom
Boker Wharncom
Boker Trance
Sebenza
Waved Endura
Delica
MiniGrip
Benchmade 710
Spyderco Atlantic Salt
Spyderco Rescue

I'm not asking for advice or recommendations, just sighing over the fact that there are so many knives and so little money. :( :D

Comment as you wish. ;)

I know what you mean. I have a folder on my computer with pictures of

different knives "To Buy" and the folder just keeps getting bigger and

bigger :D

Whoops, forgot to add the Buck Hartsook to that list in the first post. :D

Hmm, a folder with pictures of desired knives? Sounds tempting. ;)

jackreacher,

That's a good Idea. The problem is I'd make them my screen saver and then I just be more temped to spend the milk money on the knives. Not a good thing man, not a good thing.

As you see, the wish list presents another dilemma. I have knives on it ranging in cost from about $25-$30 to $300+. Do I buy all the inexpensive knives before the more expensive ones, and thus have a larger collection to enjoy sooner, or do I jump right in and save for the pricey ones I want, saving a little bit longer, but then getting those knives sooner because I don't diminish my saving on the less expensive knives?

Decisions, decisions.

I was at that point early on and realized, only after I had collected at lot of the inexpensive knives, that a little bit of patience would have enabled me to have fewer, but better knives. That was about 12 years ago. Now there are some really great knives available for a very good price so collecting inexpensive now may be the way to go.

I hear 'ya cosine. Just added another to my "to buy" list last night.

I was really hoping to get one off my list before putting another one on, dadgummit.

I'd tell everybody what went on my list, but nobody needs to consider another one on their list. Unless they want. But that could start a frenzy of people causing other people to rethink and/or expand their lists.

I think that would kind of cause an exponential growth nuclear chain reaction of "to buy" lists. Could be dangerous.

I'm lucky enough to usually pick one knife and obsess over it and I don't really want another one until I get the first one. Problem is I usually nickel and dime myself into spending $100 more than I wanted to at first, but at least I'm getting a good knife now. Started off wanting a Gerber until I learned how bad they've become, moved to a CRKT that was a little overpriced for the materials, then a Benchmade Griptilian that I was 95% sure I wanted, and now I just ordered my 710 today.

that's a pretty good progression... my method basically involved buying all of the knives along the way

I've got 7 of the knives on your list, from small & cheap to the most expensive.

I would recommend a halfway process between satisfying your knife-buying urge and saving up for the great knives. Start putting money aside -- drop dollar bills and change into an old coffee can if necessary -- toward that Sebenza. Along the way, pick up the occasional cheaper knife, to keep yourself learning.

Evaluate what you would do with the knife. I have a few inexpensive but useful knives that I actually carry. My 710 sits in a drawer, superseded by my Sebenzas.

Look at the Trance, my recent acquisition. It replaced my Subcom, because it's also a compact knife, but much more capable. And both of them are easily affordable.

Choose between the TDI and the HAK -- do you need concealment, or a more conventional grip? Choose between the Endura Wave and the Delica, 2 otherwise very similar knives. And so on. Your list will be more compact, and the knives you leave on it will be more accessible sooner.

If I pare the list right down to the bare necessities, and eliminate knives that are similar, I'm left with:

HAK
Sebenza
Subcom or Trance (either, not both)
Delica
MiniGrip

Let's start that plan, thanks for the idea Esav Benyamin...

*pulls coffee can over, drops in coinage and green paper*

There's the start for the HAK and the Sebenza. ;)

Alright, I've added another coffee can to the number of then I already am dropping money in. I've got one for a 16" A3 AR-15 (I'm working on filling that one up sooner than later, you know with that H.R. 1022 bill in committee and everything, just in case my letters to my reps don't do much good), one for an electric bass, one for the couple of rounds of golf I want to play this summer... :D

Sometimes talkin' out loud just helps ya prioritize, ya know... :)

Interesting point Esav. And interesting that you bring up Sebenza's. The knife I added to my "to buy" list last night is a BM Monochrome. I'd LOVE a Sebenza. How long is going to take for me to save up for one? Long.

The Monochrome jumped out at me while looking at the BM catalog last night. Framelock, nice. Handles, not titanium, but stainless is fine. Blade, N690, researched it here...people seem to like it. Made in Taiwan...what do you want for $30-40?

Not bad and I can buy, use, and enjoy it instead of saving God knows how long for it.

Not gonna stop me from dreaming about (or maybe stashing some money away in a can for) a Loveless drop point, but hey.

Too bad you can't get your first Sebenza the way I got mine -- I won it in a contest.

I bought the others and my Mnandi and three One-Piece fixed blades off the Exchange Forums. Way less than retail. Especially if it's going to be a user, buying it new is paying more than necessary.

There are a lot of good framelocks on the market, titanium and steel. The Monocrom is a beautiful little knife.

I think Mr. Benyamin pretty much hit the nail on the head. That is a great idea and one I'm going to try. I'll just tape a picture of the desired knife on the coffee can and start filling it up! Guess you can teach a middle aged dog new tricks:D .
