Still searching for "The" knife. I rarely get out to use and abuse my blades as much as I'd like and IDPA season is starting again, so I'm thinking of thinning my small herd (3Busse & 1 Swamp Rat) down to one or two knives, one of which will probably be the SWKW Rat Warden. Anyway right now I've got a FFBM with black and blue G10 mags, an ASH1 with standard black G10 scales, and a HH with standard micarta scales. The FFBM is a user, the ASH1 has been used once and has a scuff or two in the black finish. The HH is new and unused but does have one tiny scratch/scuff on the spine. Anyway, I'm looking at advice on which one's to trade or sell and what one or two other knives to buy/trade into.

I like a big chopper and I like the FFBM, but after trying several different FSHs I think I could be happy with a standard FSH. I'd love to have a Ruck Kensai or an AK. I actually like the Ruck better, but as a Rugger, I may be prejudiced. When I mention a Ruck or AK for chopping or splitting wood, I was advised to step away from the trough:D. Considering the FSH or maybe a Uncle Mofo. I had a couple of Mr. Mofo's but didn't like the blade catch, loved the balance. I'v heard rumor that even though it is lighter, its a better chopper than a FSH. Is there a significant difference in the chopping ability of the FSH and HH? I really, really like the ASH1, but don't think that it would be as good a chopper as a FSH or Uncle, despite its thickness & weight. Also, for chopping I worry about pinky pinch with the handle shape, that and I think it's a little thicker than it needs to be. I'd like to try an SE, to see if the thinner stock made it lighter enough to make it a keeper.

Anyway. I'm thinking right now I'm going to pair down to one chopper/big camp knife. Probably an FSH or Uncle Mofo (if I can find one) and the Rat Warden. I figure if that doesn't do the trick I'll dig out my axe or my multitool. I'd love to have a Ruck or AK to trim the hedges with, my wife's always after me about them and I haven't found a set of clippers I like yet:)

Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Get a "Nick." And while you're cooking with it, you can think about that next New Busse. Good Luck with your next move!

Sounds like you need a good ol CGFBM. I had a HH and traded it away. Just a little too heavy for the size. (Kinda want it back though. :D ) Same with the FFBM. I had one with mag handles, and it was just too much to be carried around, and too big in the handles for me. I think a FFBM with standard handles might not be too bad, and a CGFSH would be a good candidate also.

Until I got my Basic 9 ( ;) ), my CGFBM was my go to chopper. It will always be one of my favorites.

Which ASH-1 do you have? CG or LE?

I have an off the wall idea on this one Greg... Send that FFBM to Ban for a little thinning and Convexing. Turn that sucker into an insane Chopped (As if it wasn't one already). Drop the HH, and keep the ASH-1.

That'll get you a "golden" 3. Chopper, Mid and Small blades... Just my lowly opinion!
