Deckel Pantograph -- opinions?

I'm always on the look out for more shop tools (you can never have too many ;-) ). I've got a line on a Deckel KF-12. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 5. It's seen normal use, but not abused.

How useful is something like this? I currently do not have a mill. Would I be able to use it as a Mill/Drill machine?

What would be a good deal on something like this? $1500? $1000? $500?

I have no idea what something like this is worth, how to use it, or anything. So I'm looking for any feedback, no matter how trivial.

I just don't want to pass something up, that 5yrs from now I might be kicking myself.

thanks!

A pantograph mill is a cool machine. They are used to duplicate parts. I think quite a few guys use them to reproduce folder frames etc.

If you can snag it for not much cash and have the space then why not? I don't believe it would be extremely useful for normal milling and drilling operations, but I've not personally used one.

Thanks for the link!

well, that one is definitely in better condition (and also more expensive) than the one I'm looking at.

Deckel, Gorton, and similar pantograph mills will do almost anything you want them to do. You can even make custom maker's stamps.

Sorry but if you dont know what one is you dont need one yet. You would be much better of with a small mill first.
Please dont take this the wrong way.

I think you should get it if you can. Much of my experience has come from thinking I need something, getting it, then learning how to use it while not having a clue before hand.

I agree.

If it's affordable and doable I'd get it.

Buying the small hobby type mills that everyone wants are expensive on the used market because they are small

This mill has lots of functions that you can use including engraving like Bill mentioned
but has been replaced by
CNC in professional shops
