Deer Blood Coated Talon

I got folks around here calling me a liar. I left my Talonite Talon coated in deer blood for a couple of days. I wiped it off with a paper towel and some hot water.

Is it pitted? No.
Discolored? No.
Still look like new? Yes. Well there is still a little dried blood in the handle grooves.

This knife has cleaned three deer so far and was a pleasure to use. I even separated the leg joints with the blade when I popped the feet off.

Now after a couple of blood coated days the metal still looks new. People around here think I'm crazy. Well that may be true, but the talonite did as expected. One guy asked me what I used to clean up the knife and I told him just a paper towel. He was amazed.

I did notice that the deer tallow would stick to the metal more than a steel knife. It would collect on the blade. I am curious as to why that happens.

Good design Rob and nice knife Will. When Camillus comes out with a talonite folder or even a stockman, "hint hint" let me know.

I belive it! I carry mine as a neck knife and it gets lots of sweat on it and no corrosion at all. Use it in the kitchen to cut all manner or vegatables and no stain at all.

As for tallow sticking on the blade....haven't a clue! Must be magic.:>)

BTW, after cutting up 3 deer, did you have to touch up the edge much/at all and how dull do you estimate it was after the hunting season cuttings?

Sorry it took so long for me to get back. I had "another" buck to skin last night.

I found that I needed to touch up the edge with a smooth steel last night before I could get the same cutting efficiency. The edge came back easy. I used my Speed-Tech to peel the back straps out because I try to keep it real sharp. Hey, it was raining and cold.

I was disappointed when I finished that I realized that I had promised myself that I use my Neil Blackwood talonite hunter on the next one. It was raining, so I hung the deer and started work with the Talon. I was wanting to get back inside. I am presently surveying my den for a good spot to hang a single tree. I guess my forgetfulness is a result of owning several knives.

I like the way the Talon performs. I am still interested in the tallow sticking to the blade and if anyone else has experienced the same result.

I still don't like the sheath that much. I am considering having Kenny Rowe make me a back pocket sheath for it.

The Talon, in my opinion, is a good knife with a good functional design; plus, you don't have to clean it for a couple of days.

i too have feild dressed and skinned 4 deer this year with my talon...only touching up the blade once with a sharpmaker 204, after the 3rd deer...as far as the talow sticking to the blade...maybe its the finish on the blade???not sure but it cleans up well, the talon by far has been the best knife i have used on feild dressing, caping,or cutting flesh bar none. great user!

MTF3, glad you are liking the Talon! I am an avid Whitetail hunter myself and it is the design that I like the best for a deer knife, and it works well on Elk, Antelope, Bear and Mountain Lion as well. Dont think anyone has used one on a Bighorn or Moose yet that I am aware of... The tallow comment is interesting, and the finish of the blade may be why you notice that. My custom blades are finished by hand rubbing lengthways with the blade and I actually find Talonite to not have fat stick to it like steel.

Tell your freinds that dont believe you about the corrosion that there just isnt any iron in the alloy to speak of to rust! (less than 3%)I gave up trying to corrode it by natural means, saltwater, acid, etc.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Rob, Thanks..

I will have to give my Cetan a try on one. The Talon was just handy since I was carrying in my truck. It is a good design. More deer hunters should know about this one.

I didn't realize how strong the knife was until I snapped the tip off one of my kitchen knives, which is a commerical butchering knife, separating a joint in the same manner I was using the Talon. I was slicing up a front shoulder when I decided to separate the bones for my dogs and grabbed the kitchen knife. I stuck it in the joint like I had done to pop the feet off and snap.

Russ, good to hear from a fellow Mississippian.

MTF3,
Glad you like your TALON! I've been skinning deer and hogs with one for quite awhile now, and it still amazes me. I haven't noticed any difference in the way deer fat, or tallow, sticks to the blade compared to steel. I'll keep and eye out for that tendency. There is no reason that I know of that would make fat stick to the blade.

BTW, If you like leather sheaths, Kenny Rowe DOES make a really nice one for the TALON.

Rob,
I know of one moose being skinned so far with a TALON. A friend of Dad's from BUCKMASTERS took one on a moose hunt and skinned one. He couldn't believe that he never had to sharpen the knife during the whole process.

Happy New Year!

Thanks Will,

It was good to finally meet you in New York.

I have Kenny Rowe on speed-dial. I will give him a hollar soon and discuss a sheath with him.

Here is the sheath he did for my Neil Blackwood talonite medium hunter. Instead of a belt loop it has a clip on the back.

Will, would you consider it a sacrilege if I took the handles off and made myself some out of deer antler? I thought it might be fun. I don't think the knife needs any modification, but it was just an idea that popped in my head.
