Ive been talking to a young american lad over here in the UK and he was telling me that his father used to take down deer with just a knife and that he wants his son to do this on their next trip home, a rite of passage sort of thing, i was wondering if anyone had heard of this sort of thing and if so what sort of knife would be used, or am i just having my chain pulled,
Chris.

He was probably using a convex blade made of .308 steel with a Rockwell hardness of 150, hurled at 3800 FPS...

I suppose it's not impossible to do. The only time I have gotten close enough to a deer to perform a stunt like that is inside a petting zoo. Sounds far fetched to me.

Yeah, I see an opportunity or two to get a few stabs in! :D

A spear, yes, knife, VERY unlikely, certainly not to the level where it could be a regular "rite of passage" for anyone!

Hey! The deer didn't stop hitting the guy at the end of the round when the bell rang!! And he didn't go to the neutral corner when his knee hit the ground!!! lol.

The Angeles National Forest starts just north of the LA City limits and many LA County suburbs. Back in the late 1960s a friend of mine worked for the department of forestry and it was fairly common to find deer wandering around in that forest with Italian picklock-style switchblades stuck in them. City boys would throw knives at the rather tame deer. Usually the deer ran away. If you routinely fed deer in your backyard you might be able to get one with a heavy throwing knife. I might be able to do it around my house above Colorado Springs, but it would be quite illegal. It also wouldn't qualify as "hunting" in my book.

Your Friend Is Most Likely Yankin' Yer Chain:D

It wouldn't be impossible, just highly unlikely...I suppose if you waited in a tree for days,a deer just might wander right beneath you,for you to pounce on it with your bowie.

Things like that only happen in the movies, like First Blood for instance, when he killed the boar.

Take care

I have "heard" this story from old timers. "They" waited quietly up into the branches over a deer trail and dropped down on deer and plunging a spear between the shoulder blades. Never knew anyone first hand who had done this or where it originated.

I 've heard that the tracker Tom Brown could get close enough to a deer that he touch them, and it became a game of deer tag for him as a young boy. not everyone is Tom Brown.

It seems i may be having my chain pulled by the young lad (who is 17 and just started dating my step daughter) or more likely he is either mistaken what his father said or is having his leg pulled, pity really i was looking foward to building him a knife for the job, thanks all for your comments,
Gullable Chris.

Most likely what you just said.I didn't know the kid was 17.A lot of teen boys are like parrots, the repeat everything they hear.Don't be too hard on yourself;)

Take care

It is not terribly uncommon to hunt feral hogs with a knife. Of course, they use dogs ("fighting breeds" like pitbulls) to run them and pin them, then the hunter goes in with a large knife for the coup de grace.

Before the advent of firearms, stag hunting in Europe was much the same. Dogs ran the deer and the hunter dispatched it with a large knife.
