Well, the Deer here are taking their toll, I'm not a hunter but I'm thinking
about it more and more!

My middle daughter swerved to miss a deer and ended up spun around and
slammed into a guard rail, lucky it was there, otherwise she'd have gone down
a steep hillside off of route 549, it was about 11:30pm foggy/rainy/cold just
perfect conditions for black ice...she also ended up taking out a tire too.
a fun night for dad :)

and tonight, my youngest daughter's boy friend was heading home and also
swerved to miss a deer, also foggy/rainy/cold along route 328, but he wasn't
quite as lucky, he ended up spinning around and went into a gully, winding up
with his car on the drivers side down and passenger side looking at the sky!
He caught a ride back to our house, he was about 3 miles out when it happened.
Went over, some guys stopped by and we pushed the car back onto it's wheels
the car started, some kind of volkswagen 4 door and we pushed him out of
the gully back onto the road. Didn't look like TOO much damage, but he also
lost a tire, another fun night for dad :) of course he looked at me seriously
and said, "I hope this won't make you not trust me driving with your daughter?"
I replied, it was an accident, just glad you were safe!
(and quietly saying, glad she wasn't with you at the time! )

So, I may start looking for a rifle soon to take up shooting those deer!
probably not, but man it's a dangerous thing lately!

Rant mode off, cleaning up and heading to bed, hopefully all night!

Gary, I live in NEPA to, Delaware Water Gap area, I've been here about 25 years and in that time I've hit 6 deer and missed dozens.

I hit one on a motorcycle, minor damage to the bike, a few scrapes and bruises for me, even hit one with a Ford Escort all I did was bust out the grill and put a baseball size ding in the fender.

Last one I hit was this past spring, I hit it and it rolled over the hood and off to the side, no major damage.

I've learned that more people are hurt tryin' to avoid hittin' deer than if they hit 'em.

The last deer I tried to miss, I was drivin' my wife's 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe and I swerved to miss a deer that was runnin' down the side of the mountain, when I swerved my tire hit the soft shoulder, (PA's full of 'em) and I couldn't get the wheels to turn back onto the road, short story I hit a 2' in diameter tree and cut it down with the SUV, I totaled my wife's truck, (something I hear about to this day 3 years later), luckily all I did was break my thumb when the airbag went off and blew my hands off the steerin' wheel.

Thankfully your family is alright, I do sympathize though as my daughter's about to turn 19 and I still remind her when deer activity is high to be extra careful.

Here's the link for Bradford County, what really cracks me up is when you click on it they show a deer walkin' across the screen as it loads the rest of the page.

Hey Gary, you must have found some really nice Case knives livin' up there, is it worth the trip up your way to check out yardsales and flea markets lookin' for old folders?

BTW if yer lookin' for a safe replacement vehicle I'll swear by the Santa Fe for safety.

A man was killed close to where I live, that hit a big buck and it was trapped in his windshield. The deer beat him to death with it's foot hooves, trying to escape.

There's a deer! ^
:D

Exactly. In this neck of Pennswoods:D, the Deer population is lower than the good old days. Myself I have been seeing hunting camps where they are lucky to get one deer in rifle deer season. Where we would see 30 to 40, we are now lucky to see 3 to 5 in a herd, if that.

Last time I saw figures it was 20,000 deer killed per year in PA ! There's a community nearby in Pike county that's had twice the incidence of deer/car crashes so they hire professional hunters to trim the herd.Last year they took 500 and the year before 700 deer ! Many drivers are clueless .At dawn and dusk it's best to look at the sides of the road rather than at the road !!

Yah, it's a dangerous thing!!!
Back when I got out of the Navy in 1976, my friend and I were riding our
motorcyles home from Elmira, a very foggy night, we'd take turns leading
the way, when my turn came up I saw a deer on my left side, heading up
an embankment, the rascal WHEELED about and jumped in front of me!!!
Luckily I had slowed down to about 20 by that time and when I hit the deer
broadside the bike went down, as did I, and slid for a short ways, fortunately
the bike suffered minor damage and I escaped with just some minor scratches.
The guys at work didn't believe me until when we left to go home, they noticed
the deer hair in the rim of my head light and they were like WOW you really did hit
a deer!!

We're not big on deer in New York City but I did see a cab hit a horse once.

The deer out here in New Jersey are going to have to start paying taxes. I think there's more of them than us! Forget about hunting them, they live practically in people's backyards.

Deer Season is right around the corner.

All I need is a street address, so I can set up my Blind. :D

Don't get me wrong, hitting deer isn't ever a good thing, unless you don't damage the meat to bad.I've hit deer in NY and PA and had many more near misses, deer are a lot worse in NY than PA.The bigger problem with deer is that most drivers swerve when they see them and then end up hitting something else,my oldest son totaled a car shortly after he started driving because he swerved to miss one.The chance of not getting any damage in a deer/car accident is pretty slim but I've at least been able to drive away after I hit the couple that I came in contact with.I do remember one night a few years back coming up I81 near Ravine, there were 10 or 12 ran across the road in front of a few rigs and a couple of cars, there was nobody hurt but they had to close I81 until they could clean up the water and fuel coming out of the trucks from damaged radiators and fuel lines.:grumpy:

You don't need a blind. Just set up in the swimming pool.

I had one run into the side of one of those 4' high little kid pools, it collapsed the side and pushed the water to one side of the pool and when the wave returned it washed the deer of his feet and into the creek in my yard.

I laughed my butt off then spent the next day tryin' to console my daughter, ('cause her pool was gone), wish I had my camera with me then.

Thanks for remindin' me I needed a good laugh.:D
