Very nice job, I hope he uses it on many deer.... One comment on "skinners" ,for deer much of the skinning is pulling with occassional cutting of membrane. I have an old Gerber which has no point ,so is for skinning only - I never use it ! .....Your knife looks like a good combination.

A nicely balance combination of materials. There is a NC knifemaker named McFalls who does nice work but I think this is a couple of steps above.

The blade guard is good for a young (actually any) hunter who will be working blind in the chest cavity when cleaning his deer. Did you blue the blade or is it just dark because of shadow in the picture?

The handle looks sturdy enough for some gentle pounding and big enough for a good grip. The wood is very fine also

Thanks for all the kind words. The blade was tripple etched. First was in vinager at about 150F(heated in microwave). Soak time about 3 min. Then buffed with 4/0 steel wool. Second etch was 4 to 1 water/ferric chloride solution. At the time I placed the blade in the solution, I added 2tbs of 3% peroxide. This speeds up the etch considerably. Soak time 1min ,+or-. Another round of 4/0 buffing. Third etch was hot vinager again, then 4/0.
The blade was cleaned with acetone after each buffing. The finish is dark and suprisingly stable.
I have used this triple etch on three blades and the feedback has been all positive.

Delivered the knife today. Parents were very pleased. Yes Mom was even impressed. :)
The son will get it a few days sooner it seems.
