on the sharpmaker

doesnt anyone know?

it looks like 30 degrees on the edge, but i'm not sure.

Mine was under that, but there is going to be some variance. You could ask Sal on the Spyderco form what they aim for when sharpening.

Per the Spyderco Sharpmaster sharpening instruction video - the knives come from the Spyderco factory sharpened at 30 degrees but you should resharpened at 40 degrees total.

The Sharpmaker has both 30 degree and 40 degree settings. The video says the 30 degree setting is only to be used if the knife is very dull (and needs to be reprofiled) and once used you switch to the 40 degree setting to finish the sharpening process.

It seems to me that they would really have liked to have had the knives sharpened at 40 degrees from the get-go but their profiling machines are set at 30 degrees and they don't want to spend the extra time/money to resharpen at 40 degrees so they suggest the user do it when the knife needs resharpening. I may have this wrong but that's what I hear in the video.

As their edges are set at ~15 degrees it allows a quick sharpening on 20 degrees for the user, this is done intentionally for greater ease of sharpening and cutting ability.

Cliff is correct for a durable edge that cuts well. I'm with Frank and keep mine at 30.

I've found S30V and VG-10 both hold 30 very nicely. What I may lose in durability, I gain in a "hungry edge" and can easily sharpen without changing anything. I guess that makes me lazy? ;)

YMMV.
