Defective Rockstead ***Need Help***

I purchased a new Rockstead Shin from one of the two U.S. distributers. It wasn't Fort Henry. Due to the cost involved, I asked that the knife be checked before it left the distributor's shop. The knife was delivered overnight and is almost everything others have touted except for one thing. Can you see what it is? Check the 2 photos below to see what it is before reading on.

Rockstead forgot to install a pocket clip on a $1200 blade!

I called the distributor and they assured me that they can deliver the pocket clip straight from Japan in 4-5 business days. Upon receiving both screws and pocket clip I assume I can just screw on the pocket clip and voila! However, upon closer inspection I don't see any threads in the holes. In addition, I also see a small recess on the inside of the aluminum slab where the screws will end up. This alludes to an additional back-plate for the screws to properly fasten I suspect.

Hence, I'm wondering if I will be able to properly install the clip without breaking down the knife or if the lack of threaded holes will preclude me from installing the screws needed to secure the clip since a machining step would have been skipped.

I need Rockstead Shin owners to look inside their aluminum knife-handle to see if additional parts are needed besides 2 screws and a pocket clip. Do you see a metal back-plate that the screws fasten to? Anyone brave enough to unscrew their pocket clip could let me know if the holes are threaded or clean/smooth. Any pictures of the inside would help immensely. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Yes, but if the situation can be easily rectified then I'd like to keep it. If input from Shin owners proves to be problematic then I'll return it.

I send it back for it to be fixed or replaced. You can always ask them to send you a new one while you are sending this one back if your feeling a little anxious. Worse they can is do no. But no pocket clip on even a $20 knife in which it's suppose to have one is unacceptable to me, a $1200 knife well lets just say I be less to impressed to say the least and wonder what else they let through if they already did that on this particular knife.

Well, they obviously didn't look the knife over prior to shipping it out to you.
Hopefully someone with one will post their experience on if a backing plate is what the clip screws screw into or not.

Hopefully someone responds with the information I need by tonight but it's starting to look bleak. Bob6794's advice is starting to sound like the most rational course of action.

Okay. Mine has a backing plate. You can only see one of the pocket clip screws, but it definitely screws into what looks like a steel backing plate. They might include it when they ship the pocket clip but i dont know how you could get to that second screw without dissassembly. Email me for a pic.

Do you believe that the plate can be slipped into position without disassembly and the two screws can be screwed into the plate? I believe disassembly voids the warranty.

Oh man, that sucks. I'd just send it back for a replacement. I don't want to go through the hassle of taking it apart if that's the case to install the clip.

the outer scale can be removed very easy,

so the dealer did not bother to check the box, some body in Japan will have a hard day

Sorry for your luck. That is a beauty knife.

Sorry this is a little off topic but that's a great idea to make a replaceable insert for the clip screws. How many times has someone had the clip screws strip?

I bought a new rockstead higo from Tosho Knife Arts in Toronto. it had a problem and they sent it back to Japan and paid for The shipping. i'd send it back. I wouldn't even bother to try to do anything other then ship it back

Don't try to take it apart. For the massive price tag, everything should be flawless.

I would definitely send it back.
Expecting them to pay fully for shipping.

THEIR mistake, not yours.
Messing with it might void their (Rockstead's) warranty.

Doug

The Shin was sent back for a refund. Too much hassle which caused me to wonder what else was wrong with the knife. And to be frank, my money deserves better. I was sad to see her go, but she will be replaced in short time.
