defense caliber from the range.45 Long Colt.

Any number of loads from a 45 Colt make a good defense round .It's been that way since 1873 !!

I had one of the Ruger Blackhawks in .45 Colt, used to load a cast 250 gr. semi-wadcutter over 8 grains of unique or so.
I woulld not have wanted to be in the way of one of these.

For fun one time, I loaded up 50 rounds with black powder, just to see what our "Wild West" guys experienced. Let me tell you, not a pipsqueak load!

I would not recommend this, but a friend loaded a number of rounds up to .44 Magnum specs and we fired them through his .45 Blackhawk. The pistol seemed to take it allright, but I had to wonder what repeated stress of that sort would do to it. So did my friend, so he backed off on his loads. But they were fun to shoot.

I have a Ruger Vaquero in .45 colt and I use silvertip hollow point ammo for self/home defense. It does aweful things to it's target.
