Since there isn't a blade length limit for folding knives in Carson City, I thought that I'd ask what knives I should look into for self defense. I can also carry an automatic with up to a 3 inch blade, but I think that I should go with a normal folding knife since there isn't a blade legnth limit for non-autos. What blade legnth do you think is practical for a defensive knife? I think that I should stay away from liner locks on a defensive folder, right? Here are some knives that I've been thinking about:

-BM Axis AFCK
-REKAT Sifu(If I can find a decent one)
-Spyderco Lil' Temperance
-Spyderco Gunting

What others should I consider?

Thanks!

Jeff

Benchmade 42, 43, etc. SWAT Balisong. Very quick opening and balisongs can be used closed in a defensive situation. There are dozens of openings for balisongs, but all you really need to do is pick one and practice it until you can do it w/ your eyes closed and the handle covered in soft soap. After that, its a blade w/ a handle, like the others you mentioned. The 2 mentioned above have blades > 4". They may fall under the definition of auto though.

> NO blade length limit for folding knives <

this sounds nearly like our lokal law:
no blade limit AT ALL! (except auto knives)

My favorites are:
1) Cold Steel Vaquero Grande
2) REKAT Sifu (yes second because for SD only i prefer serrated)
3) Cold Steel Scimitar (serrated)
4) CRKT CKFF

If fixed would be legal the list may change ;)

what is your hand size? the AFCK is for big hands, make sure you like the way it feels, i would also file down the studs so it wouldnt accidentally close.

here is my list:

AXIS AFCK
AXIS TSEK
BM 710
Spyderco Chinnok
Spyderco lil'temperance
Emerson SOCFK (spear point)
Emerson Commander

Also Consider the Socom Elite, handle one of these, i think they're just plain crazy. I havent Played with an Amphibian yet, but they look pretty good too.

there are all sorts of customs for you to look into as well, but it seems you want to stick to production folders.

REKAT Sifu. It has a 5.4 inch-long blade, and a 12 inch total length.:).

I know that I didn't post a price range, but by looking at my list of knives that I have already been thinking about I think you should have a general idea.

My vote from your list, or any other :), is for the REKAT Sifu. With a low grip it actually gives you as much reach as even the CS Vaquero Grande. It rides quite comfortably in a pocket, presents fast, and handles like a much smaller knife. Size is useful, but the Sifu has great balance and blade geometry going for it as well.
