Defensive knife issue, Matriarch and the like

There have been several posts recently concerning the availability of the matriarch, and reasons for it's limited distribution.

Yes, it's a shame that a good design like the matriarch is deemed too politically incorrect for the United States and Sad that preparing to defend oneself is deemed unhealthy in today's society. Some would rather rely on a BDU wearing police force (no disrespect intended to LEOs what so ever).

Concurrently though, I can see Sal's point about releasing a purely defensive knife at a low price point could feasibly cause Spyderco a public relations headache.

But tools are an issue that everyone should stand solid on. A knife, like a firearm, is a tool, no better or worse than any other. It's the person wielding it that should be censured should the need arise, not the tool.

There are mothers who have lost children to firearm deaths, but I am present today, typing this little diatribe because of the presence of a firearm.

More people are fatally stabbed with kitchen knives than any other type of blade. Something to think about.

Chrisjohn - well said and thanx for the understanding. We've actually already had a problem with a young person arrested with a Matriarch, despite out attempt to control distribution.

Demonstrates a good reason for AKTI. You are all members of AKTI aren't you? What are you gonna do, wait 'till your younger?

Aren't these forums great?!

Just got back from a night run, with a matriarch in my running shorts I might add, and found a reply from the CEO of Spyderco, can't beat that.

amen to that chris, oh yes, where did you happen to get that matriarch?

I found a site that was selling them(?), problem is, that i couldn't understand the language the website was written in, BTW how much did you get it for?

P.S. you wouldn't want to sell it, would you?

What was the "young person" doing when he was arrested with a Matriarch?

Was it

... illegal possession of the knife? For people in general or minors in particular?

... actual or threatened criminal misuse of the knife?

... some other sort of criminal behavior, not directly involving the knife?

James - at this time, all we know of is possession, although my guess is that there is more to it. However, had he been carrying a more PC piece, he might not have been arrested.

I use a serrated Harpy at work daily...it makes the most terrifying cuts with relatively easy passes in very heavy cardboard. I keep two of them razor sharp with the handy-dandy Spyderco Deluxe Triangle Sharpmaker.

The Matriarch would have been quite an interesting piece for my wife to try out. I dunno...

The Matriarch has an overall blade length of over 3.5". Pretty large for most urban areas besides its "unusual" appearance.
