Hi,

what exactly is the difference between a modern bayonet and survival/tactical knife?

The photos I've seen of modern bayonets (eg OKC3S by Ontario) look pretty much like a fixed blade survival / tactical knife.

{I'm aware of the history of bayonets, and the traditional long bladed kinds, I'm asking about the modern ones.}

Also, I've noticed that many of the advertised bayonets have a wire cutter on them. Does it work efficiently? Why isn't this feature part of survival knives? Or is it a useless and merely traditional feature of the modern bayonet that people don't want to give up.

Thanks,
buckmeister:)

a bayonet is made to be attched to a rifle. that is what makes it a bayonet.

By definition: "A blade adapted to fit the muzzle end of a rifle and used as a weapon in close combat."

they are making bayonets more practical these days, because the day of the bayonet charge is long gone, and it makes more sense to carry a blade that is useful for a lot more than just stabbing.

Bayonets are now just multipurpose knives.They've evolved from plug bayonets that plugged into the barrel th those that attached to bayonet lugs on the barrel. Long triangular blades to yataghan sword/bayonet type.Special ones for engineers with saw teeth on the spine .They were needed with muzzle loading guns but now are not.

Older ones,shortened and reworked make excellent throwers.:thumbup: :cool:
