How long does a thread needs to be inactive before it's concidered to be necroposting if you comment on it? I saw somebody saying 120 days or something like that.

Let me get back to you in July of 2032...........

It seems to me that if someone has some really new information relating to an old post that contained a lot of input it doesn't hurt anyone to resurrect the original thread and add the new information. I'm thinking of the thread from years ago where many forum members shared their epoxy testing results with each other and the thread got quite long but filled with info. If a new technique or product is discovered that is truly superior it might be best shared by referring to the original thread. Posting to old threads might irritate some but what is the real harm. Further why ridicule a less experienced forum user for an innocent post to an old thread? What is the good of that? Larry

Usually the issue with necroposting is asking questions to people that are no longer around to answer.

We would end up with threads that go on for years spanning hundreds of pages where good info would be lost
If the thread title is clear all threads on the particulars of any subject will come up in a search.

The best way to decide if it is a necropost is look at the start date, and scan through the posts t see if it had stopped, started, and ended. If it has been resurrected a couple times, or dead for over a couple years, it is best to start a new thread. You then link the old thread.

Something like this:
New Thread - Making Damascus
I was reading this thread . "abcegfrjhtuytuyjnvnBF.hsdhgdsf.com " and wanted to know if any of you do XYZ as well. I saw a YouTube video where a guy used ……..

What is really funny is when the people who yell at you for necroposting are same ones who constantly tell you to use the search function which just happens to be how you found the necrothread to begin with. :p

I'm not a huge fan of posting here, #1, because I'm not confident in my level of experience/craftsmanship, #2, fear of necroposting and getting yelled at.

I can't remember yelling at any new person for necroposting???? I welcome them and point out to look at the date of the last posts. I highly discourage the necroposts with questions asked to people who have not been around for years, or advise on someone's project that was finished in 2010.

Using the search engine is the recommendation for people seeking information.
If a person posts, "How can I make a forge", " What steel should I start on", etc. - a search will provide him his answers.

Yelling is probably not the best way to describe it. The thing is, I use the search a lot, and some things naturally were asked years ago. The problem is, I'll think of another question, and sometimes go to ask it, then realize it's a 5 year old thread. I normally just don't ask. It's not a huge deal, I just don't feel totally comfortable asking a lot of questions. It's a great site, and I've learned a lot checking it out.

Another way to deal with a question you are unsure about posting is message the person you want to ask.
