I think I finally made one that I think is sharp. This is hair shaveing sharp.
Its a small game skinner with a 2 1/2" blade.

click on pic to blow up.

let me know when you can pluck a hair from your head and hold it horizontal and push it to the blade and watch it pop off the blade :D

its a cool trick to do with a nicely honed razor but not really useful in a user knife as the edge is way too thin for any "real" work

It depends upon what you need to cut with it.
I have knives that are honed to a very shiny razor edge that will pop hair just like that but aren't worth much in cutting plastic and fibrous materials.
Push cutting a sheet of newspaper is always awesome and leaves those watching amazed, but a 300 grit blade that would rip a mess in the same paper will do MUCH better in cutting plastic or fiber.

Sharp is when just showing the knife to your arm hair will cause it to fall off in patches ;)

Sharpness depends on it's intended usage like Alarion mentioned. A scapel is sharp but very limited in use.

Just for general culture, since you mention scalpels, the sharpest tools in the world are ophtalmic scalpels and ultramicrotomes.
An ultramicrotome is a tool designed to cut microbes into slices like salami. :D
The blades are made of obxidian or glass (obsidian actually is natural glass), which yelds the sharpest possible edge.

Sharp(my definition) is pulling a hair from my beard, fold it over and shaving slivers off it. That's an RWWilson trick:-)

Spent a little time with R.W. in November. He can really put an edge on! Even after running the blade over a piece of Sambar 50 times you could glide the blade up your arm and watch the hair disappear.

He got me cuttin' that deer antler. heheheYes he can sharpen a knife.
Andy, that knife of yers just looks plumb sharp!!

It's when you start bleeding before you've realized you've cut yourself... :)

i did that on a sheath today. I often do some of the leather cutting on a sheath with the knife that's going into it. Gives me an idea not only how sharp it is but how it handles.

Somehow I sliced the side of my right index finger and didn't know it for.. however long. I guess it's a good thing, i was wondering how well a full convex grind wharncliffe with around a 1/8 thickness and only a 9/16 blade depth would work out.

I admit to having used superglue, but usually i just put duct tape on.
