My understanding of a "sterile" knife is one that has no identifying markings on it. This designation arose with the "black knives" that, unlike other issue knives (or anything else Uncle Sam provides), had no serial numbers, "made in the USA", or stock numbers, or anything else that would identify it as an American military-issue item.

My question is: If a knife has absolutely no markings, except for the maker's initials on the blade, is it still a sterile knife?

Thanks in advance for the input.

And now for a more serious reply:

My knives MUST be sterile because I've got them all rolled up in bed nice and cozy next to each other and I take them out almost every day just to fondle and cuddle with them and put them in the right mood. When I'm good and ready I put it back in the sheath. But in several years, not a single one of them has reproduced. Darn. I was so hoping that I would be able to breed them so that I wouldn't have to keep paying all this money to adopt more

And old thread on this topic: Usefulness of Sterile Knives

Let's be serious, a sterile knife would be one with NO identifying marks and the maker would agree to not have a record of its production. To be realistic though, the Law Enforcement Agencies are not idiots, if they retreive an unmarked obvious custom knife used in what the believe to be a crime, they could easily trace the knife and I would expect the maker to do his best to remember who purchased the particular knife. Better to buy a production knife with cash.

A knife that does not have and will never have a "junior" or "mini" version of it. The Gerber EZ-Out, BM AFCK, BM Stryker, and MT SOCOM are all not sterile.

Sometimes I wonder about this kind of stuff. I slept with my Gerber EZ-Out one day, and the next day I went to a store and saw an EZ-Out Junior!

hmmmm! I thought sterile meant it had no bacteria on it!

I own a sterile MPK from Mission Knife and Tools. I described it to the company and was told that there was only 1 order filled for the military. It has NO markings of any kind including the mfg. I was also happy to find out from the company that what I have is a collectors item since no more were made and would not be made unless specifically required by the military, but since everyone knows that the SEALS were issued sterile knives, if a sterile knife was found then who do you suppose they would guess had been there??
