What exactly does "Factory Build - Out" mean?

Brand: Buck Knives
Release: Limited Edition Custom Build Out
Production: 450
Model: 890650BO-B
Special Note: Factory Build Out
Features: "This is a very sweet Tactical/Hunting knife by Buck. The blade is 420HC Steel from the 650 Knighthawk and the handle is the highly desired G10 in Black from the Strider 890. These are very limited in number and not mass produced. This knife is sure to be a collector's item down the road and when they are gone, they are gone."

Factory Build Out means that they've built all of that specific knife that they will ever build.

Thanks.

My fascination with Buck Knives started when I first saw the Buckmaster (which, in retrospect, is a somewhat ridiculous design).

That was from the time of Ramboesque knives!

I have several Buck 111 Folding Hunters that I bought off eBay. I found out after the fact, in an email correspondence with Buck Knives, that they were specifically produced as Factory Build-Outs. As explained to me, they take whatever spare parts and materials they have laying around for a particular model and use it all up to 'build out' the particular model. Once the surplus parts and materials have been used up, that's it. They don't produce any more.

The last of the scraps, so to speak? Interesting.

Don't get me wrong. They are quality; no different from any other production piece. Built to the same specs with the same warranty. It's just that in the process of normal production, the factory produces a surplus of parts and materials which stay on the shelf until they're needed (maybe for repairs or whatever), or until the manufacturer decides to discontinue the model and make best use of the parts left over.

Obsessed's explanation is better than mine; and, he is exactly right in his definition.
