My wife backed our Jeep Liberty CRD 2.8 turbo deisel about 30 feet out of the driveway and the engine stopped. The gauges and lights all work. The engine turns over, but it will not start. My fear is the injector pump, but wouldn't that be a slow death and not instant like that?

My mechanic just towed it away...... What should I expect?

I had something similar happen to my F-250 7.3L PSD years ago. Turned out there was nothing wrong beyond a little $25 cam position sensor. Keep your fingers crossed, it could be something simple.

I'm the guy the mechanic will say, "I have been a mechanic for 40 years--I have NEVER seen that before!"

In general, everything just quits suddenly with no explosion or anything is actually good. It's usually something pretty simple and pretty fundamental. Good luck.

With a injector pump it all depends on what breaks as to whether it's a slow death or a quick one,my bet would be on the electronic fuel shutoff though.

A large fuel leak should be obvious. Otherwise, what that code probably means is an apparent loss of fuel system pressure. This could be just a bad pressure sensor.

probably a sensor or other electrical issue. There are a lot more sensors in one of those merc diesels than a dozen old cumminses (ok maybe not quite)
It might be a $$ fix, but I doubt it would cause long term problems, unlike some things where the truck is just never the same after.

A sensor went out.. loss of fuel pressure due to a leak somewhere, probably sucked in air and needs to be bled.. you never know.. lots of variables with those..

mono, don't worry man this time you WILL get a break... !!!

sounds like something simple but I doubt its a fuel filter because typically the diesel will run rough and loud.. times like this make us all wished we invest in a meter to check codes..maybe its your prime screw at the filter have you had your filter changed recently??

Let's see-- since I have owned it-- EGR valve replaced (40,0000). Front and rear diffs drained and flushed as well as the Xfer case. New brakes/rotors/calipurs/tires all the way around. Recall on some trailing arm stabilizer (rear) replaced. Transmission dip stick tube replaced (broke in half) replaced. Nope, no fuel filter that I know of.
My mechanic said something about a hose to the turbo?? I guess we'll find out more tomorrow!!

This truck is a 2005 and has 63,000 miles on it. I loved both Cherokees that I owned-I hate this Liberty! I am SICK of buying Mobil 1 Sythetic 0w40 7.5 qts @$7.99.
I'd rather drive my wife's Focus!

wow.. we'll see tomorrow I guess keep us posted..

btw, I have a '97 cherokee and love it.. :) many mods for this xj... hope your troubles work out...

After the towing expense it cost me $140!! It was the fuel filter. Even the Doge/Jeep dealer couldn't figure it out!!
I am going to trade it in asap.

Thanks for all your help and support!!

It sucks that Dodge didn't support the dealers well when they rolled out the Merc engines. Every dealership has at least one Cummins guy, but no one likes to work on the mercs, and you don't want to pay shop rate at a Mercedes dealer!

My mechanic is great. He has 2 other CRD's that come to him for work.

Our local Dodge dealer is horrible and because of that I will NEVER own a Crysler/Dodge product. Their service department is a joke.
