This is just an FYI for you guys that have work here.

My wife's cat has been ill since last Wed. We don't know what is wrong with him. I suspect he swallowed something he was not supposed to and its is now impacted in his intestine. We were in the vets office all Sunday afternoon and then this morning when he could barely walk the vet told us to get him there right away for emergency exploratory surgery. This alone would not be a problem for me and I'd be able to work.

The problem is my wife's cat is a big Maine Coon cat and even in his weakened state he is still strong and a chore to get into the cat carrier not to forget to mention that he is heavy for a cat at 22 pounds or sod and really long and hard to hang onto. I threw out my back this morning getting him in our carrier bending over the wrong way trying to manipulate him in the door and close it so we could take him to the vet. The last time this happened I was down three days and it was not this bad. I can barely walk at the moment and just getting up from my recliner is a chore. I'll be on motrin and muscle relaxers for a time here so bare with me.

Sorry but work has been halted until my back is normal again guys. When I can stand and bend again I'll pick back up where I left off on Friday.

Get some rest, STR!

Gotta take care of your back....can't do nuthin w/o it. :thumbdn:

Thoughts/Prayers headed your way.

Thanks for the lil' package in the mail, by the way. ;)

Oh yeah. No problem Dan thanks.

Who of figured it. I've wrestled my Saint Bernard off and on with no problem but the wife's darn cat found the strength to try to escape when he caught a glimpse of that cage.

Thanks

Take care Steve. I hurt my back About 16 years ago when my Dad wad terminally ill and I was helping my Mom with him. Dad at the time didn't weigh more than a 100 lbs. but I was twisted over when I lifted and that did it. Dad was not hurt but my back has never been the same. Occasionally, it will go out and Ibuprofen and muscle relaxants are the things that help me. Good luck and take care. Hope your cat is OK.

Go easy on the pain pills - real easy to send either your liver or stomach into fits with those things. Check with you Doc to see about flexerol - helps with muscle spasms and doesn't leave you doppy as a loon. Take 'er easy!

Be careful with the pain pills. They can make you feel you're OK and then you'll go and make the damage worse. Pain is there to tell you something.

Sorry about the back. Sorry about the cat, too. I hope you're both back to feeling better very soon.

I am actually taking Flexoril with Motrin so I'm good. No need for much more than Motrin and a Flexoril so far and I'm feeling better and can get comfortable. But I can't push it. Right now pushing it is not anything to worry about because it won't let me forget it hurts if I move the wrong way. Nice to have the lap top and wireless for my recliner I'll say that.

As for Max, our cat. He survived his surgery. Pretty gross to discuss but what I know is this. The stupid arse cat swallowed one of his cat toys, which was a furry ball. This much we knew already because he already threw that up on Thursday evening, but when he didn't get better after that and showed serious concern on Sunday for being sickly we thought there must be something else down there. So we were all wondering what else he swallowed. On Sunday we took the xray at the vets and it showed like there was something lodged in one part of his intestine right outside the stomach. The ball he puked up was soft and came out so we figured something else was there that could not be moved out and it looked big enough to lodge in his intestine trying to leave just outside the stomach long enough to cause the body to kick in and treat it like a foreign object and inflame the area to raise his white cell count which was way high from his blood work.

After todays exploratory surgery we know the intestine and stomach are clean and free of any further impaction but the vet said he saw what appeared to be like small ulcerations on the inside right outside the stomach where the ball he swallowed had apparently lodged itself. He named that part of the body where it was stuck but I don't recall it, anyway it was where the ball lodged long enough to cause his health problems. Now if the cat doesn't stroke out in the next 24 hours or so we may be able to get him home in a couple of days after the vet stabalizes him on a liguid diet and makes sure he gets some strength and nutrition back. At least we know why he wouldn't eat though. He better live now because he just graduated to the most expensive pet we've ever owned I can tell you that. But he's a cool cat and worth it to us. I just hope he pulls through now that we heard back from the vet.

Thanks for your concern guys.

Steve

Please take care of your back and take as much time as you need for my stuff. Good luck with your cat. We sure can get attached to our pets and I know from personal experience there's not much you won't do for one that needs help. Good luck and God bless.

OK - at probably some risk of hi-jacking this thread ( glad you are feeling a little better Steve) - here's the best It ate my homework story I've every heard:
Freind of mine had two dogs - one day he looks out of his sunporch window and sees the pit bull pullin the guts out of his German Shepherd - at least that's what it looks like - the pit's got ahold of something about three feet long that is emerging from the other dogs rear end and as he watched continius to pull more out - before he can intervene about 7 feet of somethin pretty disgusting emerges - he finally recognizes it as a pair ( somewhat the worse for wear) of his wive's pantyhose. To give you some background - this shepherd had already had two surgerys to remove things he could swallow - but couldn't quit digest.
My buddy and his wife would play the pull game with their dogs using her old panty hose -and apparently it was almost able to make it thru the digestive track - the pit was just being a buddy. It has always amazed me how in the catagory of really disguting to humans - A dog can be pretty shocking ,but multiple dogs can really achieve Nobel prizes in the " I wish I'd never seen/smelled that" catagory.
Steve - feel free not to post this - but figured you could use a good laugh - hope the cat does well!

A good laugh I need. My wife is inconsolable at the moment. We got word last night about 10pm that Max didn't make it. She is beside herself with grief.

Anyway, thanks. My back is doing a little better but its still bothering me enough to keep me out of the shop.

Hello Steve. I extend my most profound sympathies to you and your wife on the loss of your pal. I've lost quite a few furry friends, and it always hurts. May time lessen your grief and replace it with happy memories.

When it feels right, perhaps she could get another kitty. Lord knows there's plenty of them out there waiting for a new home. It's amazing what a new little one can do to heal the pain of losing the last one.

My wife had to put her 18 year old cat to sleep last year and she was broken up about it, so I know how you are feeling. It sounds cliche, but time will help heal your back and your emotions. Please tell your wife that she has our deepest sympathies.

Brother I can feel your pain in both instances!

A few years back, my wife's cat swallowed one of my 3" leather harness needles. How it managed to do that with perforating her esophagus, stomach or intestine I have no idea. But the vet removed it and the cat healed up properly.

As for the back, I had surgery on it at 21 and never had problems with it until my early 30's. Yesterday at work I must have twisted wrong because it hurts just enough to let you know it.

Motrin is good stuff. Never took Flexoril, but my understanding is that it works well too.

Take it easy, and here's to a speedy recovery!

steve,
I am so sorry for your wife's loss. Amanda, my wife, lost her best friend of 10 years three years ago. M.E. Cat was a constant source of joy for Amanda and letting her go was not easy.
Please extend our profoundest sympathies to your wife.

Brett

The trouble with cats is that they are just too tough - by the time it becomes obvious that they are not doin well - they are real -real sick. they are territorial animals who have evolved to not show weakeness so they can maintain their turf un-challenged - hmm -sounds like another species I'm familiar with?
Again -sorry about Max and sympathy for your wife's loss - hope you start to mend soon.

I am sorry for you loss Steve. I have lost dogs and know it is a strange but deep loss. My Beagle just got into the Easter chocolate but seems OK. I am currently dealing with Sciatica and yeah, Motrin helps. Lets me sleep at night.
I am carrying one of your great Spydy customs and wish blessing upon you and the family.

Julian

Hey STR,

I am sorry to read about your recent back injury & the loss of your family pet that is very sad. I pray you recover quickly & I am sorry for your loss.

~George

I am sorry to hear about your loss, I had to have our 13 yr old Pomeranian put down several years ago due to stomach cancer, I don't think we will ever get over it.

Take all the time you need to heal up and help your Wife feel better.
