Anyone out there own one of these in San Mai SG2 Damascus?

I'm wondering if this would be a wise choice of steel for an edc knife.

Any experience or comparison with M390?

Also, flat grind or saber/false?
I’m glad you posted this. I had the exact same question and was hoping someone could shed light on this. I am ready to make a purchase and am debating between the SG2 Damascus and m390

SG2 is also known as SGPS, and it’s the core steel in two different San mai blade steels that Fallkniven markets as 3G, or Laminated SGPS. They use it on all sorts of 4” and smaller fixed blades, and folders.

I’ve used it on their small U2 folder and it takes a nice edge. But I haven’t really put it through any paces.

Are these a dealer exclusive somewhere or something? I haven’t seen any San Mai Bradford’s anywhere and that sounds interesting.

Bradford better be careful or cold steel will sue over that name.:eek:

But seriously, the prices I'm seeing on these things seem ridiculously high....like $100 more than an m390 version. I've got the m390 version and it is fantastic. Would I pay $100 more for a san mai version? No way. I'll take m390 or even 3v over 3g all day every day at that price.

Sue over “San Mai”? I thought that was the Japanese word for a technique that laminates three layers of steel. Has Cold Steel somehow trademarked it?

Yeah. I think I am going to go with the M390. Everything I am reading online seems to suggest minimal, if any, benefits of SG2 over M390 and since the damascus design on these blades is not as attractive as a lot of other damascus designs (which I would pay more for), I think I will skip this one and stick with M390.

Good choice. I don’t think there’s much competition, really. M390 excels at stainlessness, edge holding, and ease of sharpening. Though a very good steel, I don’t think SG2 compares. We are awash in good choices.

Edit: why is the OP coming along and trying to get the thread deleted? Was a good discussion.

Yeah. This thread should be left up so that it is searchable in Google for when people need this info.

I'll second the good choice. I believe m390 is the better steel and it is much less expensive.
