Yup, I did it. I was trying to cut the insulation off some wire and the Delica slipped. I put a nice 1" slice in the top of my index finger, between the second and third joints. I was bleeding all over the place – what a mess!

Well, one trip to the ER and six stitches is apparently the price to pay to learn a valuable lesson. On the positive side, I had just sharpened the edge razor sharp, so it was a nice clean cut.

P.S. It's kind of grotesque when the doctor opens the cut in your finger nice and wide (without anesthesia, I might add) and then has you bend your finger to watch the tendon move.

P.P.S. Sorry, no pictures, you sickos :p

That has gotta hurt. It is OK to let fly with cuss word or two. #$%^&

And then, when the tendon is found to be intact, they take a toothbrush and antiseptic and scrub the wound vigorously, without any painkiller. Don't ask me how I know this.

A hardy handclasp, ouch, to you my friend.

PS: At my former address two adult male neighbors had each cut their noses in 1/2 with chainsaws. They were cutting tree branches over their heads. They actually did not look all that bad, though years after the fact.

PPS: My former physician was egged into telling his most nasty cut story. The guy had the lawnmower up on the bench and stuck the top of his head into the whirling blade scalping himself.

All the best,

I just have to ask about both of these...

On the first, is there some addition to the story that explains how they BOTH cut their noses rather than just one?

And on the second, again, is there more? Was he suicidal or just turned the mower on and trying to get a look at something or other?

Were you cutting away from yourself? A fundamental rule of knife safety.

i cut myself with my bk9 while cord wrapping the handle
it was in the sheath and it slipped out
the doctor opened up the wound nice and wide (yes, it was THAT deep) and asked me if it hurt

i tell you, counting to ten never felt so long

Been there (see avatar, which shows how my daughter views me -- holding a knife and bleeding).

Mark,

As skinny as you are, it's a good thing that you didn't lose too much blood.:D.

I actually just did the same thing the other day, except I was cutting the rubber bumper off of my friends jeep. My delica is always razor sharp so I really didn't even feel it. After my 10 stitches, I went home and touched up the delica on the sharpmaker... :)

Inquizitor,

The nose jobs were separate incidents, different days & different yards. Working a chainsaw over your head puts gravity against you and is not safe. The general rule is to let the saw do the work and not your arms.

The mower cut was, as I recall, due to curiosity as to whether the blade was turning or not.

If you want to shave a limb off, here's how:

When a stick or other object gets caught in your lawn mower, turn off the mower. Then, look underneath to find the object and promptly remove it, but DON'T remove the spark plug first. If you remove the spark plug, you eliminate compression and then there's no chance for the blade to complete it revolution, once you've removed the object. No revolution, no limb loss ; )

Remove the spark plug first!! No compression = no sling blade = happy limb!

...shorter then women's.Aside from the fact that we like knives, guns, fast cars, gadgets, tools(normal men anyways) ;we like/love/need the most dangerous thing of all-women.I too have slice open my finger -not nearly as badly though-and remarked how my BM800/AFCK was razor sharp.Healed nicely. :) :) :)

On the upside, I was trying to assemble a new plasma screen TV and wiring for my wife's birthday. I got lots of brownie points for getting hurt while trying to make a nice birthday celebration for her.

Oh well, might as well embarrass myself too.

About 20 years ago, I showed a customer in the sporting goods store where I worked how to use a sharpening stone. After he bought a stone and left, I finished the job. As I was doing the last couple of strokes, I looked up and so rotated the heal of my left hand, the one holding the stone, upward just in time for a stroke. Feeling the contact, I flinched and caught my little finger too. 16 stitches at the base of my thumb, luckily I only nicked the tendon, and 6 in my finger. Damn, those fillet knives are sharp!

The store manager wouldn't let me near the knife counter for months.
