First off, I've been lurking on this forum (especially the Spyderco section
) for well over a year now, and have found a wealth of knowledge. Everyone's contributions and insights are great, just wanted to say thanks.
Getting that out of the way, Ive been juggling the carbon fiber caly 3 (zdp 189/420j2 blade) and the frn delica 4 (zdp 189 blade) in and out of edc rotation. Both of which are excellent knives and steels in their own rights, however I find myself constantly wishing that they had a love child together, lol. Now keep in mind this is all my own personal preference, but there are certain things I like/dislike about each. I love the rigidity, and little extra heft of the caly 3 with its full liners and steel spacer, to me, it just feels more "solid" in the hand. Now with saying that, I have not had any problems with the frn grip of my delica and its been a hard use edc for over a year now, but it just feels a little too light for my tastes. Now you would think that would make me carry the caly more often, it doesn't. Now I may get flamed for saying this but, I dont like the FFG. I really do like the saber grind on my delica, and have yet to need any "additional" slicing power from a ffg blade. I find the saber grind to be a lot more robust (tip especially), and have never feared using it, unlike I do in some situations with the caly. Those are my two main concerns, with the other aspects of each knife being negligible in this discussion. Now after doing a little bit of research I noticed that the delica that was made with G10 scales also has a similar setup as the caly cf does (full steel liners and spacer). After digging quite a bit, I finally found a store still selling them, however, it is only the 2009 model which has the FFG blade in vg-10. In spite of that I jumped on it this afternoon with the plans of improving it. Im sure you can all guess where this is headed now, but my plan is to blade swap the sg zdp 189 blade, with the ffg vg 10 blade. I've only seen and read about blade swaps done between knives with similar handles, so I'm hoping it should work out all the same. Any insight is always appreciated, so let me know what you guys think and I'll keep you posted.
P.S. I know a post isn't a post without something to look at, so here are the two culprits being discussed.
