Hi everyone,

a friend of mine who is interested in picking up a nice first pocketknife asked me an interesting question that I wanted to run by all of you...

He's done some research and has decided to either pull the trigger on a Delica 4 in VG-10 or wait until the end of the year when Ontario releases the RAT-2 in D2 steel.

Myself, I don't have a dog in this fight since I live in a city with a 2.5 inch blade limit and I'm happy with my Dragonfly, Roadie and SAK's.

Which knife should my friend choose?

Thanks

I'd take the VG-10 since I'm assuming since he's asking about knives he's probably not got a whole bunch of sharpening stuff.

I agree to get the Vg10 Delica. For a first pocket knife D2 is probably way too hard to sharpen. If he likes the Rat then he should get it in Aus8. For a first knife Aus8 or Vg10 are great steels and way easier to sharpen. If the first knife I ever tried to sharpen was D2 that would have been very discouraging to me.

The Spyderco Delica 4 or Native 5 would be my suggestion as a good flexible knife. D2 can be very hard to sharpen. Not a starter knife steel.

I would say Delica for ease of sharpeneing. If it sharpens back up easily it will be more encouraging, and like others said he can pick up the other knife later down the road.

Dang, this one is a head scratcher. On the one hand you have Spyderco VG10 and OKC D2 on the other. D2 is usually harder to sharpen but not in this case.
I'm gonna say Delica because its more stainless but note my RAT 1 in AUS8 is currently getting some pocket time.

I would choose the Delica 4 in VG-10, and also recommend he get a Sharpmaker if he's new to sharpening. The only issue is he'd have to decide which version of the D4 to choose: FFG, saber grind, PE, SE, CE, or hollow grind in a SS handle.
