Delica 4 WAVE question...

I'm about to buy what will be my third Spydie (I currently have a Dragonfly and a Meerkat, but want to move up to something a little larger for my EDC.)
I've pretty much decided that I will be getting a smooth edged Delica 4, but I can't for the life of me decide whether or not to go with a "waved" model.

I am definately intrigued by the wave feature, and it seems to be fun and interesting to play with, and well as make a decent bottle opener (so i've read.) The only things that are turning me off to the wave is having the blade deply when I don't want it to, and just the general "unusual" look to the knife. I don't want to freak people out or look like a wierdo if I need to use it in public. Do any of you have any experience, thoughts, or opinions to a total wave noob, such as myself? Thanks!

(I started a similar thread on the general forums, so if any of you already responded there, I greately appreciate it!!)

You can actually take the wave model out without it opening, all you have to do is when you take it out of your pocket place your thumb on the back of the blade while pulling out of your pocket.

I've had one and beat the crap out of it (edc) for over a year. No strange looks for me, but I live in the wilds of North GA. As far as unintentional deployment, you eventually get the feel of how to manage it (twist it a little while drawing). The main drawback for me was the obtuse grind that mine came with. After much effort to re-profile it, it's a breeze to maintain on the sharpmaker and a pleasure to use. The only thing I'd change (other than the initial edge) would be to make it a full flat grind rather than scandi. For me, it's a big winner.

You shouldn't expect very much bottle-opening potential out of the wave. Actually, it pretty much sucks in this aspect. Using the blade spine like you would do with a lighter is faster, easier and safer. The wave tends to slide off and between the teeth of the caps, even more so because the arc of the wave is wrong for that (and just right for opening the blade as it is intended to do).

Just pulling out the knife will catch on the seam of the pocket 99% of the time, so if you want to pull it out without opening, you will have to twist it or better do as jjurasic described. It needs a little practice, but once you got the hang of it, it works fine.

The look is a little weird compared to an ordinary blade, but not necessarily more aggresive to NKP. Maybe even a conversation piece!

I have to admit that I got bored of the feature after over a year, but I still like the blade shape a lot better. You can take the knife out of your pocket without deploying it by kinda rotating/twisting it to the other side (not toward your pocket).

My E4W feels pretty specialized compared to my E4. Mine actually came with a great grind and factory edge. It changes the character and feel of the knife, but probably not the utility of it.

I carry it in my EDC pack but carry it on my person only when I'm running (IWB). Like THG says (and congrats on 2K posts!), the novelty wears off after a while.

The wave is cool, but not necessary. I'd recommend a regular Delica. The regular spyder hole opening is the best opening method overall in my opinion.

With a non wave Delica you also get more options. You can get a regular VG-10 blade or a ZDP-189 one. If budget is not a big problem, you can also choose one with a G-10 handle and fully flat ground blade, or you can wait a while until the regular FRN, full flat grind models come out and get one of those.

My edc is a CE waved d4.
You can also set the clip tip down to totally defeat the wave.
