Hey guys, I have a quick question for you. I have let my fiancee carry my native, and she loves it. I was thinking about getting her a knife that would actually be a lot better for her as she uses it more like a box opener than anything else, but because she's rather tiny, I also want her to have something that can be deployed as quickly as possible, and I've settled on a waved Delica for this. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions that might come out as better for her, or if I've made the right choice.

Depends on the kind of clothes she likes to wear and how she wants to carry her knife. Waved Delica works best with jeans and the like and only if caried in the pocket of course. Then she must also like to use the wave for opening a knife. Not everybody is comfortable with it.
You could however always give her your Native and keep the Delica for yourself.

Fast deploymen isn't needed for cardboard boxes. Knives carried for self-protection without training is fool-hardy at best.

I would think a Cricket would work very well as a box opener b/c of the blade shape. Plus its a very small knife which would make it a great EDC IMO.

My wife loves hers.

If she intends to carry it for box cutting, it'll be a fun & useful box cutter.

If she intends to carry it for self defense, train up.

Worse comes to worse, she keeps carrying the Native and you have a new waved Delica. :D

Thank you very much for all the input so far. She really is more of a jeans and t-shirt girl, so clothing definately isn't an issue with the waved design. I understand that carrying for defense without training is more of a threat to oneself than anything else. But she has had thorough instruction from her father (a retired marine, for what it's worth,) on how to use a knife to get herself out of trouble if no other option presents itself. she does know how to get in close and use that to her avantage (and what guy is really going assault a woman for any other reason than getting close?) I just want to know if I'm doing the right thing here. And I already ruled out the Cricket, as well as some other models because she's left-handed, and for some reason has trouble with lilner locks, or even the compression lock on my Yoji.

mosesghoti,
From a woman's perspective, she'll only carry what she is comfortable with. What you think she'll find comfortable may differ from she actually does. Without getting in to models, the best possible thing would be to take her to a knife shop and let her handle several models, several brands. She might surprise you with her preferences, she might surprise herself too! I think it's great that you want to do this for her. A knife is a very personal item, we all have our preferences and no two knife knuts are the same.

I realize we women of Spyderco may be an exception, but our tastes vary greatly, from the cricket to my own personal favorite, the ATR. For what it's worth, you're doing the right thing. :)

Best of luck to you!

Kristi
