Delica 4 - why the blade style change?

The other day I was thinking of buying another Spyderco Delica but the new Delica 4 doesn't have that nice pointy blade. Do they think the new balde style will be less scarry to sheeple?

I like the previous blade grind as well. That's why I won't be buying an Endura 4 if I need to replace my current Endura.

I much prefer the newer ones---they feel heavier and stronger----the cuts on the back of the blade provide a better grip----plus being screwed together--you can take it apart.

More clip options too.

I'm not against the other features of the Delica 4, just the tip design. Maybe when I hold one of the new Delicas I might have something else to nit pick. :)

It's not as massive of a difference as people make it seem. It's a very slight curve right before the tip to reinforce it a bit. It does not limit any utility purposes that I ever run into.

Most people on BladeForums, including myself, probably preferred the pointy tip.
However most of the people buying the Delica aren't on BladeForums and like it more durable.
If you like the old style all it takes is a $70 belt sander and you can make the tip as pointy as you want, on top of giving it a nice flat grind.
Just be careful not to over-heat it.
you may have to practice a bit, but in the end you'll enjoy your knife much more having fine tuned it to your liking.

Actually, even on BF a lot of people said that they would like a stronger tip, especially when the Salt series came along. Personally, I like the old style better as well. I am just happy that the Military blade hasn't changed.

I'm a thick-tip kind of guy and I've yet to be unable to pierce anything with the D4. I have managed to take the tip off the older style, though(my fault, but it confirms my preference).

well put. I like the new tip.

I really prefer the new tip. And I have no problems with its sharpness, either. It actually works better for me during the type of cutting I do.

Initially I wasn't keen on the new design of tip, but it has grown on me. It is still a sharp penetrating tip.
I like the bigger hole and "jimping?" on the thumb ramp, but in a way wish that Spyderco has kept it unlined.

I'd love to see a VG-10 Salt I!!

the tip on the "4" models don't really bother me that much. The only complaint I have of the new ones is the lock up. I have 5 of the E4's in various configurations, and only one has a good solid play free lock up. I can't even tell you how many of the older frn models I have, but all of them are tight. I'm wondering if the 4's are made in a different Seki factory. I know there are only a few that have the machinery needed to cut ZDP. Just a thought. Anyway this is one of the reasons I currently buy from the salt lineup. All have that tight lock up as the older E3/D3 had.

Hi Rich,

The changes that were made to the 4th generation model were the result of much communication with customers. The general concensus was that there was a need for a stronger tip due to excesive tip breakage, as mentioned.

I believe you will find little or no difference in performance.
