Delica and Endura Edge Choice

Since alot of people have one or both of these knives I figured I'd ask what edge you went with and why. This is not meant to be a plain edge vs serrated thread, just wondering why either was chosen with this particular knife.

So...Serrated, Combo, or plain edge?

As a side question, what do you guys think about fully serrated knives for use in self defense? Seems like it would make sense since you have to slice through clothing, but very few "tactical" knives are available in this configuration.

Comments?

Even though Spyderco is known for their serrated edges, I always buy plain edge knives.

I don't think serrated would be good for a SD use anyway.

I purchased a Delica Plain Edge because I was buying a Calypso jr. spydie edge on sale/closeout, and I wanted both edge types. Not very scientific. I'm also going to try sharpening the plain edge. Not being very good at sharpening, I may send the spydie edge in to be sharpened. we'll see.

I have a Delica, Endura, AND a Police model...ALL have the plain-edge. Why?...Because they ARE easier to sharpen than a serrated edge, and also the plain-edge cuts more things "better" than a serrated-edge does.

HOWEVER, I AM looking to trade for a fully-serrated Police model (see the "For Trade" forum here at BladeForums if interested), as I DO think that a fully serrated edge IS "better" than a plain-edge, when it comes to a defensive/offensive knife, as it would tend to rip, rather than make a nice, "clean" cut.

The consensus in the SD community here is that it doesn't really make a difference. Remember, a serrated edge often rips and saws instead of slicing, which requires some extended contact and is not guaranteed when someone else is moving to avoid getting cut. Just having the edge be sharp is more important than what's on or not on it and serrations are more difficult to sharpen.

I say plain edge because it works well on almost anythign adn it's easier to sharpen. I'm not familiar with SD application so I won't comment.

My Spydies are plainedged.

First of all, I prefer to cut very precisely. I want the cut to be as clean and accurate as possible. And when it comes to care and accuracy, I need all the help I can get :D

Seriously, the seemingly minor advantages in speed and edge retention just aren't worth the loss of versatility to me.

And, of course, I'm biased by aesthetics. I think serrations look stupid, trendy, and useless. The serrated Calypso Jr, for example... The Calypso's one of the prettiest Spydercos ever, but slap a serrated edge on her, and it looks pretty damned goofy.

So, yeah. Good reasons and superficial reasons. Bottom line: I don't see 'em as an improvement on an EDC knife, and I jes' plain don't like 'em.

I'd go for "combo";) Most military knives of late have been in this configuration. I have the Spyderco Military & SOG Pentagon Elite ( it's not availible in PE -or- SE ) in this configuration.
Best of both worlds. ;)

AET ;)
