Delica blade play

Hello, I own a Delica 4 FFG and I noticed that when I cut something dense like a piece of wood I can feel a small amount of movement within the lock. I am curious if this is a common thing, or if this is an issue that needs warrenty repair?

Thanks, Ben (PittRules)

They are a really thin, lightweight knife with frn handles so some flex is probably normal.

It's normal on most standard style midlocks. It's self adjusting to a degree. Unless it clicks like a horse running on concrete, it's likely to be within spec.

I've had that "problem" on all three back lock Spydercos I've owned (caly 3, ladybug and dragonfly). It doesn't matter from a functional perspective but I don't like it. Sold off the Caly on account of it. Not that big of a deal on the smaller knives so I kept them. I wouldn't buy a spyderco back lock larger than a Dragonfly because of this issue...

I feel like the most common issue with lockbacks is the play within the lock "socket" which annoys me too.

My last two delicas have had zero play, but I have had plenty of others that have had play. I had a calypso replaced under warranty once for that issue but the replacement was no better.

Yes, I guess some knives are tighter than others. Also how you meationed that your warrenty replacement wasn't better; that is why it makes me feel sending mine is not worth it since I may get a knife back the same issue.

I guess I got lucky on my Dragonfly. It's solid.

The Delica is ~$60. For about $75, you can get the Manix 2 lightweight in blue FRCP. Excellent lock-up on that knife. The Para Military 2 is also a great option at around $100.

Both knives are about 3.5" blades, so a little bigger than the Delica, but smaller than the Endura. Both are FFG and are great slicers, like the Delica. Both are also quite light for their size.

The PM2 has the advantage of screw construction, so it can be fully disassembled for cleaning, if needed.

This is a common "problem" on almost all mid/back lock knives, not just spyderco's. Its par for the course for this lock type. If you dont like it, dont buy any more back locks, otherwise understand that a little vertical play on a back lock is normal and your knife is within spec.

It's a common problem, although the bladeplay often isn't really that bad, so I'm not sure I'd even classify it as a "problem".

I don't see it as a problem. My axis lock CS voyager has more vertical play than my delica. The delica isn't a hard use knife to begin with.
