Delica clip frustration

Hey all,
I recently got a 1st gen Delica and have been carrying it along with my pink Mini Grip but I'm having a problem with it that I don't have with the Mini Grip. Keeping in mind that I LIKE the knife just fine, I HATE the clip. I've had this knife slide completely out of my pocket twice in the few weeks I've owned it.

First time was in my driveway when I bent (way) over to take a look under the car. Second time was just a little while ago, just before I made a run to the store. Fortunately, it fell off inside the house and I found it, but it's driving me nuts. I didn't pay a ton for this knife, but I still don't want to lose it because it's not likely I could replace it for what I paid for it.

Has anyone ever come up with a way to make this clip grip better? I'm wondering if I could use a file or emery board to scuff the part of the clip that's supposed to hold the knife in place and make it grippier. Grip tape, maybe? Is there anything that works? I don't want to maim the knife if it's not going to work.

Is it the clipit one? I don't remember what the first model was. If it has a metal clip, take it off and put the clip in a vise and clamp it where the screws go through. Then slowly bend it in, i did this with a benchmade clip and it held good, sometimes too good. If it's a clipit then try the grip tape you suggested, or possibly put it on your wasteband so the knife is inside by your hip.

Yes, that would be the molded FRN clip. Short of making a modification to the knife, the only thing you can really do is use a lanyard and let the knife live inside your pocket. If you want to modify it, I guess you can try to send it in to someone that could put a clip on it. My recommendation is to use a lanyard, no maining to the knife and it will be safer in your pocket.

That is the the reason Spyderco makes the newer Delica/Enduras with screw on clips. Those older FRN clips tended to break, loosen, etc. The change (the way I understood it) was made as part of an evolutionary redesign. Always improving, constantly refining is what Spyderco does, and quite well.

i remember seeing a post a while back, and someone said they put shrink tubing over their clip. i haven't tried it, so i don't know how well it would work, but it's a thought.
good luck!

That is another option I considered. Has anyone ever had a Delica open in their pocket when it's being carried like that?

That's something that hadn't occurred to me. I may try that.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I've carried a Delica loose in my pocket and have never had it open, if that is the carry method you are referring too. I actually carry my knife loose in pocket all the time.

I carried a Delica 1 and a Dragonfly years ago that way and I never had that happen. The detent on those knives is excellent, I'd say better than those found on some knives that cost 3 times more.

The heat shrink might work, but I doubt that it will do anything to lessen the gap between the handle and the clip. It may infact cause more widening over time.

I have this problem with the clip on my flashlights, and futzing with the clip didn't help.

After replacing a nice light that must have snagged on a taxi seatbelt, I rigged up a little dummy cord: some utility cord with a hangman's knot looped around my belt, and a clip attached to the light. Enough cord to just keep the light hanging above the floor if dropped; that's plenty to allow decent reach without having to unclip.

Excellent. Thanks, everyone. I'll give a few of these suggestions a try and see which works best for me. Good to know it won't open in my pocket. The thought of that makes me go . This Delica seems like a good partner to my Mini Grip; they're about the same size and even though the shapes are different, they both fit my hands well.

You aren't the only one that worries about a knife opening in their pocket. It's happend to me a couple tiems - one occassion left me with a nice slice through my pocket. ;)

I'm not a big fan of the molded frn clips. If it was me I'd cut or grind the clip off and make it a dedicated pocket knife. If you really want a Delica with a decent clip, just buy a Delica4. Just my 2cents. Good luck coming up with a solution, I do like the Delicas better than the Mini grips.
