Hey everyone, I have fallen in love with my first Delica and want to make it my own. It has the light gray handles, and id like to change them. How could I dye them well? Or, is there somewhere I can get handles for less than $40? Thanks

It is possible (I wouldn't do it) to dye the scales without disassembling the knife. Just be sure to clean the knife as thoroughly as possible afterwards. As far as warranty, this quote is from the spyderco warranty info page on their website...

"Spyderco’s warranty does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening."

To me dyeing the scales, without disassembling the knife, would void the warranty as it would fall under an alteration to the knife. Hope I provided some help! Good luck in your dyeing endeavor's.

A lot of people dye their Spydercos with FRN. They use RIT dye without issues. You have to make certain the knife is suspended and does not come into contact with the bottom of the boiler. Also, you have to dye darker than the original. RIT has a dye chart for this.

I have the gray Delica and I personally like the color. It looks a bit more sophisticated than the other colors (but I do like blue and orange).

For less than the cost of scales you can buy a new Delica in another color. They are less than $60.

dying the frn is super easy, i've done a bunch of knives now. You don't have to disassemble the knife and the dye won't affect any other parts. For FRN you don't need a raging boil, and it will take the color in just a few minutes (especially gray).

Make your own scales for 10 $
This is a relative easy way to make micarta scales for it, just press the steel liners in the micarta (when it sets ;) )

Here is my delica (black and blue jeans) :

This is after the micarta has set after 24 hours :

Then drill the holes, et voila

I agree with you. The gray gives a color other than black but not something that draws a lot of attention. I carry a gray Delica very regularly.

The way they word it is such that alterations don't technically void the warranty, but damage cause by alterations does void it.

I really don't understand why so many people are so worried about warranty down the road of knife usage. Sure, if it's relatively new. But usually warranties cover "defect in material or workmanship". If you've had the knife long enough to determine that it was made right, and functions properly, to me, it's a non-issue. Make it your own. Then be sure to come back here and show off your success....or failure.

I really like the look of the light colored FRN with random spotted color like red or orange. Kind of like coy fish. I don't know why, I just do. But don't have one. Maybe some day I'll try a dye job too.

You can add hot glue in a pattern on the knife and then the dye will only affect areas not covered by the glue. Once the dye process is done, pick off the glue to see your pattern. I didn't do this one personally, I bought it from the guy who did. But I like the look!
