i carry my old delica, a serrated '95 model w/the integral clip, almost every day, and use it as my utility knife(cant cut string w/my emerson spec war lol), a great, light efficient design.
a delica wouldnt be bad for a gift for your nephew imho
The Delica would make a fine "first Spyderco" but a Salt I might be even better. Same basic ergos, but with less chance of accidents because of the blunter tip. The greater rust resistance of H1 might not be a bad thing to have either, as young folks seem to bounce between the extremes of cleaning them every time they use them and total negelect.
its a custom spec war CQC8 w/a zero bevel grind blade, though its the sharpest knife i have ever seen its not really for cutting cord/boxes/etc, though it would, just the edge is thin and its not easy to sharpen.
I have a 2003 Delica FRN/PE/VG-10 with the detent. It has been my EDC ever since I got it about six months ago. I can't say enough about this knife, it's simply awesome. It does have a very pointy tip, which I like. I suppose the tip could be too delicate for some applications, but it seems plenty stout for anything I'd use a knife for. It sharpens easily and holds an edge very well.
I have several Delicas (PE ATS-55; SE VG-10 and SE CF) and I love them all. My most carried, used and abused knife is the SE Delica. I simply can't find words enough to praise the Delica. But that's just my personal prefference.
Better talk to the nephew. Read together some knife catalogs, speak about various sizes, make a comparison among different steels, handles materials, locking systems and edge configurations, and see what he'd like.
I gave a Delica to a 15 yo boy about 1 1/2 years ago. It was serrated VG10. He likes it. It has handled a fair amount of abuse. It's a good size for a youth since it is well under 4 inches, but still big enough to be useful. It is also very unobtrusive just sitting in the pocket, unclipped. Cuts like a demon.
The VG10 Endura and Delica are simply amazing for the money! Ok so they have FRN handles and you cannot adjust them for tension etc, but heck for the money I can't think of a better knife.
I would agree though that the Salt I would make a better first knife as the steel holds a very good edge, seems immune to rust and the less aggressive tip design makes it more suitable for a less knife oriented person IMHO.
