While visiting my son on Chistmas day we were opening gifts and needed assistance opening those that were taped closed....in the process I noticed my son was using the same tool as me to expedite the process......A Spyderco DELICA.

I thought it was quite a coincidence as I have eight or ten folders to choose from and he has five or six.

When I asked to inspect his Delica I noticed there was no mark on the blade indicating the type of steel but it did have "Hoffritz" engraved in the blade.

I was curious if anyone could enlighten me as to the steel used AND what the word "Hoffritz" engraved in the blade might indicate??

Thanks,
GH

IIRC, Hoffritz was (is?) a specialty retailer which sold Spyderco knives. I have a green Ladybug with "Hoffritz" engraved on the blade. I've had it for at least 12 or 13 years.

I have an old Spyderco Standard, what they call the "knockoff Standard" because of the economical method of production, that has Hoffritz engraved on the handle just under and parallel to the clip. I bought it at a Hoffritz for Cutlery store in a mall maybe fifteen years ago or so. I remember that they tried to brand everything they sold, regardless of manufacturer, with their name. I also have a Victorinox with an inset silver Hoffritz name in the handle scale. They engraved their name at the warehouses, then sent the marked merchandise to the stores. I believe that the whole chain has now been reduced to one storefront in New York City, on 5th or Madison somewhere in the 40 block. It's now called International Cutlery or something, and the last time I was by there they had a mediocre assortment of folders and fixed blades from some of the more unusual but cheaper lines, such as Gigand and a number of Italian and French manufacturers. They did have a huuuge Parker pearl-handled exhibition whittler in the window, though - must have been two feet long.

Thanks for the info....I will pass it along to my son!!

He was fairly sure he purchased it EMS....

It does say something about Spyderco knives when they are the knife we both reach for MOST often!

Hi GH. Many years ago, we had a "relationship" with Hoffritz knives. They purchased a great deal of product and we engraved their name on the blade for them. In the early days, we didn't include the steel on all models, the one you saw is more than likely a very old model.

Sal,

Would it be possible that EMS sold the knife in question....my son is 25 and thought he had purchased it at EMS about 5-6 yrs. ago, so his purchase was not all that long ago.....

You are making me wonder if the knives might have been inadvertantly switched while my son was living at home......MY knife is about 20 years old and was purchased at a knife store(now defunct) in a NH mall. The one I am in possesion of has AUS8 STAINLESS on the blade.

By the way....how long has the DELICA been made?

Best Regards,
GH

The Delica design was created in 1990. The original mold was modified 6 times. The next mold was made in '98. It has also been modified several times.

We have not dealt with Hoffritz since their bankruptcy. It has been a while.

Hey GH- You probably got yours where I got mine! The old Hoffritz store at the Pheasant Lane Mall!!

Fozzy,

Yes you are probably right.....I was interested in learning that my recollection of "20 years ago" was so FAR off the mark!! I usually err in the other direction.

I remember a number of years ago picking my sister from Alaska up at Logan AP and on the trip home inquiring.." how long have you been in Alaska..six or eight years now".....her response was "NO FOURTEEN".

My youngest son I mentioned in my post graduated college with a degree in CJ and is in law inforcement as well.

When he graduated I took two months off of work and he and I drove to Alaska camping along our 13,500 mi. trip...

I couldn't help but notice in your profile how your interests so mirror both my sons and mine...(sanes ice climbing).

Best Regards,

GH

An interesting thread. This www forum stuff is pretty cool, got the story straight from Sal himself.

I have a green handled Delica marked "Hoffritz" that I bought from that store in Long Island, NY, January 1992, the same day I bought my wifes engagement ring. This thread brought back some memories!
