I needed a smaller knife to carry at work and got the delica. Its nice but since I already had a PM2 its hard to compare. It has some blade play, the spydie hole has some sharp edges, minor things I can get over. Biggest issue is opening. the lockback spring is SOOOO tight it makes it hard to flick open. Has anyone de-tensioned the spring to make it easier to open? Thanks guys!

Hmm, if you loosen up the pivot more to ease up opening, you'll get even more blade play.

Lockbacks aren't really "flickers" though... You can flick the Delica and some people do but usually people go through the break-in period before doing that consistently.

It it was mine, before I make a warranty service claim, I'd wash the pivot with dish soap and toothbrush... Make sure it is completely dry (compressed air, hair dryer)... Oil the pivot...tighten the pivot screw to the point where you don't have blade play.... Then use the knife until it breaks-in to your liking. Personally though I use a Delica ALOT in my rotation and I do not flick like I do my other non lockbacks.

As far as the hole having sharp edges, it is by design that it has that so it is easier for your finger to catch on to. If it is that excessive you can either sand it down or exchange it/warranty it.

With time, the action will loosen up to creamy smooth. Just gotta work the newness out.

I cleaned and oiled it, and it opens smoother but still tough to open it. The hole was SHARP so I hit it with some 400grit sandpaper to break the edge slightly. How long is break in usually?

A few days, a week maybe. Certainly not much longer. The more you exercise it, the quicker it'll be.

Tough to open and having more than very slight bladeplay is not a good combination... Because my suggestion would obviously be to loosen the pivot.

Break in usually two to four weeks of daily use but everyone is different and every knife is different. Many folks shortcut by opening and closing while watching TV hehe. It's called fondling around these parts.

Well Its my new knife, so its definitely gonna get used. I seem to remember my PM2 taking a good 2 weeks of constant opening and closing to break in properly. That is the sweetest knife I have ever had

Meh, hope I don't rain on your parade but the play in my Delica and the stiffness of the lock never really went away. It's not really made for flicking open, as others have pointed out, and the Delica/Endura are famous for vertical bladeplay known as "Seki pop", mentioned in this thread:

IMO, the knockout is probably a better knife with a better steel for around the same price. (<$60.00)

That said, the knife is quite nice. The steel, lock pop, and blade:handle ratio are things you'll have to accept though.

LEAVE THE KNIFE HALF OPEN AT NITE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS,I didn't have to do this to my Delica4 but my Cold Steel Voyager with the Triad lockback was a bear to break in:eek:now my Buck 721 needed one nite in that position and she flicks open well.

I like the Delica, I would never want to flick it open. If I wanted to flick something, I'd get something else.

like everyone else said, keep flicking open and closed everyday for about 2 weeks ,,and oil the pivot , it will get easier over time

The Delica / Endura lock backs aren't made to flick open like the PM2 & Manix2. I have found that if you can flick the Delica open then the pivot is too loose & you will have blade play.

I've fitted my Delica with polished micarta scales and no pocket clip.
Flicks open every time, lock is rock solid.
And that's without the grippy FRN and pocket clip, you just need to break it in ;)

Do you have any pics of that? sounds awesome:)

+1 on the recommendation to just let it wear in normally. My Delica, Endura, and most knives from most manufacturers take a little bit of wearing in before they get really smooth.

Sure ;)

Do some Spyder drop openings instead. That'll help polish the contact surfaces and is one way they were meant to open. Unlike an all-steel Spyderco, it won't induce too-rapid wear given the decreased handle weight on yours.

I picked up a Delica where the BF member used fluor grease this is the same stuff that gets packed into your Sebenza box when you get a Sebenza. It worked miracles on the Delica pivot! It's about $10 a tube online. Made it the smoothest opening Delica I've ever used. I've owned 5 and have used 3. It makes for great manna too on the forum, you can trade it for almost anything in its price range in case you don't like it.
