I have a Delica 4 that was a gift a couple years ago. It has been used hard and the bevels are very thick now. I've been thinking of regrinding it from its present 17/20 degree secondary/microbevel configuration. I was thinking a 10 degree/side (DPS) or even a 5 DPS slack belt regrind, followed by a belt sander power strop at 15 DPS. I could regrind against the platen, but previous attempts look pretty bad. The regrinding would likely be done with an 80 grit belt, followed by 120, then 180. Finer belts are difficult to find locally.

I would recommend staying away from the 80 because It devours metal, but that is just me and you may have it down nicely. I would use 180 myself and place the edge right above the platen, this way you'll only have a slight convex edge and you have more control.

If you want, spyderco can do it for you if you send it in, but they will match the current angle. I think with the angle's you want to grind, it might be difficult to get perfectly even, but it will definitely cut like a scalpel.

Is it ZDP 189? If so, I'd go as low as you dared, it really shines when you bring it over to the dark side.

Are you going to thin the primary grind out also, or just the edge? It should do fine at 10, but I'm wondering if the VG 10 is too soft for much less. If you keep the primary grind, then it should have enough support to work, I think.

I'll be interested in your results.

I just got my Kreined VG10 Caly 3 back from a friend, if you want to compare it to your Delica, let me know, I'll send it to you. It's *really* thin, but the edge is more like at 20 or so.

I suppose I'll just set my belt sander on the 10 degree block and have at it. If it gets into the primary grind, that's fine too. One way or the other, it will have a nice convex grind to the edge at 10 degrees. I may do it on the platen, but that tends to heat things up quicker, even with my nice fresh belts.

I would agree that 10 DPS is fine for VG-10 (individual results may vary). I have an E4 FFG that I have had at 10 DPS for a few months now and I have been told that my use is quite hard by some people's standards on these forums, and it holds up well. I am not sure I want to go thinner than that, but probably could for some guy's use patterns.
