I read in today's paper that Dell is buying Alienware. Is this good for Dell or is this bad for Alienware? Or, good for both? According to the story I read, Dell is buying them, but Alienware will still be a separate brand with their own research, development and manufacturing areas.

If alienware is still going to be a seperate company than it could be good for them, more money for research and development.

I wonder what Dell will do with their XPS line? That was marketed as competition for Alienware right?

I don't know how Alienware's customer service is, but it's about to get worse. Talking to Dell customer service is an exercise in futility. I've talked to some bad customer service people before, but Dell was the worst.

Can you say, "Dude your getting a Dell" in Indian?
Dells Customer Service is outsourced to India, nuff said. :barf:

I know a couple of people that bought Alienware comps and had tons of problems with them. This was about 4 years ago so I couldn't tell you how they are today.

Amen brother. Why would they put someone on the phone that can't speak even acceptable english and knows almost nothing about computers except how to read a manual?

I can tell you their customer service sucks, after my comp being down for two weeks I fixed it myself. I went with Alienware just so if I had problems I would have help. Never again will I buy a comp from anyone, my next one I will build myself

It's probably bad like most have said , honestly though a person is far better off buying thier own goodies and making the computer themselves.
I built my latest pc about two years back and it cost just over 500 for the parts , the video isnt top of the line but it is still a very zippy pc.
The whole outsourcing thing is irritating , I know everyone needs to work but it really helps when the two involved parties (customer and customer service) can understand each other.

I did a customer service chat with Dell yesterday. As it was all text, there was no accent problem and in about 3 minutes they had figured out to send to me a new unit. It will be here today or tommorrow.

I was pleased.

Oh, and we have an Alienware. It's been a good PC, two years old now. three other PCs are up and running we've built ourselves. AndI've had two Dell notebooks and they were reliable. I'd buy from them again.

Anyone can snap together a high-end desktop PC for about half the price of a comparable Dell or Alienware. The real loss is in the laptop market. Many laptop parts are propietary and are not interchangeable. Building a laptop from individual components is not practical, if possible at all. Both Dell and Alienware made high-performance laptops that could actually be used as a desktop replacement. Other companies likely do too, but Dell and Alienware were the main competitors for that market share.

Guess there's room for one of the smaller companies to step up now.

If you ever work for a relatively small company that announces that it has been bought by a relatively large company, and they tell you that it will be a separate division and everything will be the same as it always was, then trust me, Dude, it's time to start working on your resume. In a merger like this, pretty much everybody gets fucked: the customers, the employees, and even the low-level stockholders, if they're not careful.

It won't affect me much seeing as neither are as price efficient as building a PC myself. Alienware's have always been (To my knowledge, haven't looked at their prices recently) horribly overpriced to the point where I'd never consider buying one. It's more satisfying to build it oneself anyways.
