I found an old(ish) Delta 1" belt/5" disk sander in my father's shed today, and was wondering if it could be used for grinding bevels? A quick look online turned up no replacement belts for the size it needed (1" x 30", I think).

Thanks:)

Sounds good!
I beleave belts can be made to sice if you buy like 12 at the time.

You'll find it pretty underpowered, but I guess it'a better than hand filing.
1" X 30" is fairly common I know ENCO carries them and 1" X 42".

1x30 is an inexpensive place to start grinding your own blades. I started with one of the Delta machines. There are plenty of sources for 1x30 belts. Have a look at ebay there are several sellers selling sanding belts. search on 1x30 or sanding belts. you should be able to find a dozen for under $10 You can also pick up a copy of Blade at your local news stand there are at least 3 mail order houses that sell belts that advertsise in Blade.

supergrit has them i belive they have just about everything and anything for sanding or buffing

It will grind bevels, and it will make you really appreciate a good grinder when you get one:D . I have purchased 1x30 belts at Sears also.

I had to put my Coote in storage (moving) and I have used a 1X30 foir a couple of months, now. harbor freight carries the more course grits, Pop's has the finer stuff. Lowes will have to 220.
