Would the Delta 4x36" be a good grinder to start with. I am on a fixed budget and really can't spend much more than $175. I was pretty surprised with the Tomahawk I made from a disc sander, but that took a whole lot of time to get to the point where it is now, I still need to put a finish on it. Thanks for all the help and input.

A 4X36 will do as a starter. I've got one that I still use for somethings but they as a rule, aren't powerful enough and the belts don't last long. They are also too slow to hog metal and too fast for fine finish. Make a few on it and you might want to consider building a 2X72. If you get to the point where you make a few bucks on your knifemaking, buy a really good grinder. It's the most important knifmaking tool you will own.

Remember, knifemaking is like any other art, it's the maker that makes great knives not the tool. The tool just makes it easier. I am amazed at some of the really good stuff turned out on the first few trys from some of the members here. Some do it with no special tools other the desire to make a good knife.:)
