I am looking at making one of the delta 5 knife kits and I was wondering how good the knives where. Will this thing make a good user, or is it more of a wall hanger? I wish they sold pre drilled green canvis micarta...I guess im stuck with the black.

I have heard good things about the Delta 5.

This one is my particular favorite model.
As far as a "user" knife goes , that's exactly what you get, those babes are not wall hangers by a long shot.
Aus8 steel (not bad at all)... You could do some nice custom work on that if you wished , spacer material , nice wood for scales (or whatever , micarta etc) filework on the spine.

One rule though , if you buy one you have to post pictures of the finished product !! :D

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have a couple of the Delta 5 Chute knife kits on order w/black canvas micarta. In the past, I've bought more than a few kits from knifekits, and they are all top notch:D They used to have one called the TC-4 which was a tactical/utility and IIRC they were also AUS-8 and they are very good. One of my TC-4's stilll gets used pretty hard and it's held up fine. I just got a DDR-3 folder kit from them recently and it's actually quite a bit heavier (and built like a tank) than I thought:) Nice thing is, you can "tweak" 'em to how you like them.

Does anybody know if the pre cut drilled handles are cut to use both bolsters...or is it left long so you just use one if you want? I ordered my kit yesterday and started thinking about this today. I want to just use the top bolster but im afriade they might have cut it to use both. I would just buy some micarta and make my own handles but I dont have to tools to drill and tap the handles myself...

That's actually a good question - never even thought about that:) I should be receiving my kits any day, so I can post when I get mine. You may want to send knifekits an email and ask. Alex should get back to you pretty quick. The blade should be pre-drilled for the pins, so you would only have to deal with the handle material. Drill press would be ideal, but you can use a hand drill for the handle materials if you need to - that's how I started.

Hope this helps - gord

Just a quick update on the Delta 5 kit - mine showed up yesterday. The handle material I received requires that the rear bolsters be in place. Both sets of bolsters are slightly oversize, including the handle material (I have black canvas micarta) - they fit quite tight between the bolsters, but they are thicker and larger. I guess it depends on your point of view on this, but in one sense, there's lots of "wiggle room" for contouring that handle:) Compared to the DDR-3 folder kit, this one is going to take a fair amount of work. Based on the quick fit I tried, the front bolsters are going to have to be thinned out a bit (I'm planning to contour them as well) to keep the proportions of handle width to blade length reasonable. If you stay close to the supplied stuff, the handle is going to be pretty thick. Both of mine were the Chute Knife implementation. Excellent satin finish on the blade and very close to shaving sharp. False edge was way thinner than I thought, but all things considered, this is still going to be pretty nice as well as a good tough blade when it's finished.

Hope this helps - gord

I received my kit today, and my handles are the opposite of yours. The handles are very loose with the bolsters, and one of the handles holes was drilled twice and is too big of a hole for the screws. I emailed them to see if I could get a new set because I think I got a flawed one. I am going to try making it with the pre cut handles and making my own handles with a single bolster and see which one I like more. I got the Modern Bowie and it also came with a nice finish and edge.

If you ordered it from Texas they will fix you up right. I have had a couple of parts that were faulty in the kits , was not a problem.
Dont let the messed up part though bum you out , these kits are not made by old village craftsmen , they are mass produced and made to order and like anything else sometimes things slip thru :p
That's why they are so..... cost effective :D ..... did not want to say cheap :D

I got my kit from knife kits, emailed them about the handles yesterday and they sent me an email back today telling me they are sending me new handles. Over all i am very impressed with there service and quality of most of the kit. When i finish the kit ill post a picture providing it doesnt look too bad :D
