Delta belt/disk combo sander

I've got one of these that I occasionally use for light woodworking. I'm wondering if I could use it to sharpen my HI Khuks. Is so, what grit belts would I need?

1"x30" belt grinders are a fantastic tool to have around for any sharpening. I primarily use a 330 grit sharpening belt for minor reprofiling and touching up dull blades. Rather than swap out the belts frequently (it's a bit of a pain with the grinder I have) I follow-up the grinding with some sharpening using wet/dry sandpaper, ceramic stones, and stropping on my jeans. Won't be quite are refined a job as what Mr. Hossum describes, but it does the trick for me.

Actually, even my hasty, lazy-man's method is probably overkill with regards to khuks primarily used for wood chopping. They don't need to be shaving sharp... I guess it's just some psychological comforting thing for me. :o

Anyway, like Jerry said in that thread, there's no one right way to do it. There's general principles, but there's room for variation and personal preferences as to what your final technique/degree of sharpness will turn out like.

I use a 180 or 220 grit belt for re-profiling and 400 grit belt for sharpening. My Delta is the 1x30-5. If you have never worked on a blade before, practice on some cheap knives first or the kardas.

I hear you on that one - I sharpen up to 2000 grit then finish on a 0.3 micron chromium oxide loaded bench strop. If you use the kukri for lighter tasks such as brush and grasses, the shaving edge actually comes in pretty handy - a very light flick of the wrist and it just goes through them like butter! Having a shaving edge also helps greatly if you use the curved bottom portion as a draw knife. Since chopping only uses the "sweet spot", it doesn't actually effect the the performance of the other two tasks which use the belly and curve respectively :)
