Most people think of Opinel folders as quite inexpensive utility knives. Most, but not all, are.

I just went absolutely ape and ordered two super deluxe Opinel folding knives that I noted that the USA importer listed as available. The first is a #10 slim with a horn tip handle and mirror polished blade and the second is a #8 slim with an ebony wood handle and mirror polished blade. The horn version comes in a wood case and based on the photo the whole handle is one piece of smooth finish carved horn. IMO a beautiful knife. From the photos the ebony handle and mirror polished blade combination looks both elegant and beautiful too. No dishwasher for these!

If the web site info is correct the knives should ship tomorrow as no engraving ordered.

Very cool!

Anxious to know what you think of the horn handle Opinel. I recently found myself looking at it, and wondering how it would be. My Sardinian Resolza seems to have whet my appetite for the blond color horn has a great looking handle material. I keep thinking of late, that I'm not getting any younger, and that horn is some beautiful stuff.

I'm looking forward to it as well. I'm planning on getting a walnut no. 8 wit a celtic cross engraving on the blade, but I'm moving out in a few days so my ordering all has to be put on hold temporarily, which is killing me.

For those who want to see them the Opinel importers web site has multiple excellent photos of both knives as I am not a photographer. The Slim horn is under the "Slim" category then select "Slim Horn Tip". The Ebony is under the "Limited Editions" and then select "Ebony Handle". The ebony is available in both regular and slim #8 versions. As mentioned I have the slim version coming.

If you browse the site there are a number of upgrade and exotic wood and horn handled Opinels shown for those who want something a bit fancier than the standard Beechwood handle folders. I already have two olive wood handle standard stainless steel Opinels, a #6 and a #8 from other sources. Both have more visible color and grain contrast than beechwood. Unfortunately it looks like all the fancy wood versions are only available in stainless, at least in the USA.

Sorry for no links but I believe that is against site policy for non-member firms. Not trying to shill for the importer but it seems to be the only local source for some of the Opinels made with more exotic materials, the ones I like. I have no connection with the importer other than as a retail customer.

Looks cool, Opinels has a lot of potential for upscale handle materials I especially like the Ebony, it's very pleasing to the eye, and not overdone. A bit of sticker shock, but still in the scheme of things, it's not a big expenditure if you like the handle materials and are a die hard Opinel fan. I've got an 06 Lux in Bubinga, it looks great, and different, one of the reasons I purchased it, was that CZ uses the Lux suffix on a lot of their slightly fancier firearms, must be a European thing.
