I had my old college roommate and his wife and daughter over for a BBQ last weekend. They are both staunch and outspoken democrats... During the course of the day, we all began discussing politics and the problems with each other's parties. The daughter, Julie, told us that we all make running the country too difficult. Intrigued, I asked her what she meant. She told me someday she wanted to be president, and when that happened she would make things better. Amused, I asked her how. She pondered a moment, and said "I would get everyone a house to live in. No more homeless people." I told her that was a very worthy goal. Her parents were watching the conversation in dead silence. I then told her that if she wanted to help the homeless, she could come to my house again, and rake the yard, trim the hedges, clean my gutters, and wash the windows. I would pay her $50.00. She then could go down to the corner in town where the homeless hung out, and give them the $50.00. Julie thought a moment, and asked "Why don't we just have them come and do the work themselves, and they would have $50.00." I then told her "Welcome to the Republican party." Her parents aren't returning our calls.
